Being a widow is like a torture, you know? Time crawls. There are good days, okay days, and bad days. And you never know which one is coming.
I am into my 2nd month, trying to survive one day at a time. We had been married for only a year, and then he died from a massive stroke.
When a bad day arrives, I escape into shopping for clothes, a typical woman.
Since my husband passed away, I cannot wear anything of color, only black.
Last Sunday was a bad day, and I decided to shop for a black dress to wear to work.
So there I was at Ross' store, working my way through all the dresses on hangers. Suddenly I thought I was having a weird deja vu. In that very store, at the same location, in the same isle, some time ago I was shopping for a dress...a WHITE dress. When was it? Fifteen months ago, before my wedding. Now I am back here, looking for a BLACK dress.
I froze in horror at this thought. With my throat tightly squeezed, my breathing stopped, eyes welled with tears, I fled the damn store.
Being a widow is a torture sometimes. A slow torture.

I lost my husband of a massive stroke two years ago and I feel for you. It's a strange place in life where we thought we would never be - especially at our age. It's almost like you are 20 years old all over again, having to pave a new life path (and in a hurry) only don't know where to start. From my own experience, it is not unusual to seek distraction (shopping and such) especially when it can bring you a glimmer of positive emotion. Eventually, something or someone will inspire you to channel that energy into an activity that will take your life in a new direction.
Outside of this forum do you have local support like family and good friends? I went to a local support group and then opted for private counseling. I am really glad that you found this website, as it will be a tremendous help to you. It really doesn't have to be torture if you have good people supporting and encouraging you. This is a process and you will get through it.
