You know, that question makes me nuts too! There is never a space for widowed so you know what? I WRITE IT IN!!

when anyone asks I say that I am widowed and PROUDLY now. the term use to make me nuts too ! "widowed" but it does mean that my husband didn't up and LEAVE or anyhting like that. It means I WISH he were still here!

Love to you, and i KNOW that one drives me nuts...still!!! when are they gonna to start making a box for that?

I agree writing in widowed lets them know you had no choice in this selection of married or single...

I wrie in widowed as well. I mean I am married to Mike in this world and beyond...but anyone dealing with official paperwork could care less.

Drives me crazy TOO!!!! Married and Single are not the only options. I refuse to be Single. So given the option of two I choose MARRIED! Let them figure out what to do with that! Then if it asks me to list my spouse I do and put (deceased) by his name. Ask a stupid question, get a stupid answer.

Guess I'm getting an attitude! lol

I remember distinctly the first form where I had to indicate my status. Oh, boy, I was emotional, tears rolled and dropped on that form when I checked the little square "widow" .

Life goes on, and no matter how I feel about it, being a widow is my reality; so I tamed my heart to be quiet when I answer that question in a matter of fact tone of voice today.

Because of my age, often there is surprised look, and ... an attempt to ask more.
I do not elaborate, just making sure that they understand that any further casual questions about my loss are not welcomed, that I just give them a concise response because I must, nothing else.

I put married on most forms even if they had a widow section. I guess it was because I couldn't believe I wasn't. I would enter under spouse his name and deceased. It mustbe a common feeling for us who aren't married anymore through no fault of our own. Sharon

I write in widow as well. If it is electronic and widow is not an option I check married. I hate that the IRS does not have a widowed option. Only on my taxes do I show single. I also write the IRS nasty notes, but they fall on deaf ears.

I HATE that one too!! If there is no spot for widow (which I hate that word)...I check married, because that is how I feel. I had a friend refer to me as single one night...My response was I am not single, I am married, Brian died we didnt get divorced... I was angry and anoyed...I know she didnt mean anything by it...but still sometimes I think people should just think a little before letting the words flow out!! Hugs, Lauri

I went from my parents home to my married home with George. I dont know any other way to be and I will always be married to him. I will never be single and it makes me mad too. Hugs, Jo

I also write in widow where I can. I like the idea of checking married and adding his name with the word "deceased" by it on anything where that is possible. I agree that it's maddening that the IRS doesn't have a "widow" option--it killed me to have to change my W4 form to show single--I don't feel single in any way except for the loneliness. I will always feel married.
