Your statement that you saw what cancer did to your spouse - turned a strong man into this weak person struck me as one way to look at it. I suppose that is what happens, but I like to think of it that they became weak due to the ferocious fight they put up in order to try to stay here for their family.
My wife presented with stage four colon cancer. But we were "lucky" that she responded well to treatment. We never really eliminated the cancer ( they could not detect it a few times ) but she had five operations and 180 chemotherapy treatments over 10 years.
And that last month she was at home in hospice, only able to talk in whispers. At the end her body jut shut down, could not swallow. And you are correct - this strong woman who brought four children into this world was weak and totally dependent on us for everything. She died a year ago in May and she winged her flight to the next life.
It may be difficult for you at this time, but please try to remember your husband as the strong person that he was. The person is not the body, he is still whole in the next life :)
You are very early in the process, but just let me mention something about the future. Nobody can change the past or know the future. Some of the happiest moments of my life have happened after my daughter was killed in an auto accident 18 years ago this month. At that time I did not think it was possible to ever feel joy again. It can happen - my kids got married and we welcomed grandchildren into this life.
So I would not expect you will be able to see that any time soon, lol, this grief business is hard work. There are some very kind and tender people on this site who post ( and then there are people like me, lol ).
So we wish you strength as you navigate your way at your pace.

I'm so sorry like everyone else. I lost my Honey 2 months after his diagnosis. Too fast, way too fast.
But I'm thankful I found DS...I don't know what I would do without these wonderful people here.Come back often.
Hugs & Peace,

This site is full of wonderful, caring people who share their feelings, support each other and offer suggestions. We all "get it" and understand what you are going thru. Please come here often for support. Sending hugs and prayers. Mary W.
I too, thought I would pass before my husband. My husband was given 2yrs, and lost his battle after 3yrs. He was always so healthy. He stopped smoking 20+ yrs ago. He would hike up and down hills in mins. Even during his chemo, he held strong willed. Never in my wildest dreams did I ever think I would lose him. I wasn't prepared.
Afterwards, I went to a support group, then therapy for a very short time. About 6 months into my grieving process, I found this site. It was one of the better things that happened to me. It helped. I hope you will come back and join in. Widow/widower needs other widows/widowers. We have an understanding and empathy that you will not find anywhere else. Welcome and hugs to you.
As I mentioned to another newcomer, you are so early in your grief, it is understandable that your pain is profound. This is an unbelievably difficult journey that we are all traveling together. I am glad you found this group, and I hope it will be as comforting to you as it has been to me. Just knowing that I am not alone in what I'm feeling has been a tremendous help. Please come here as often as you can.
Wishing you peace . . .
