Is this part of normal grieving? Or am I going round the bend? This is the second time I've felt violated and betrayed, taken it out on a relative - all because of a misperception.
One of my husband's sons was coming to the house to pick up some things of his Dad's. I had put them aside for him. I was not at home, but he has a key and I certainly don't mind him coming in (he used to live with us).
Well, I got home. Found the pile of things gone (good), but noticed a picture gone. It was a picture I had put aside to give to someone else. I totally freaked. Thought this son had stolen it. Went around the house gathering up all the valuables (jewellery, silverware), jumped into the car and left them with my daughter in her home for "safekeeping". Told my daughter I was going to change the locks, call the police, etc. etc.
Finally I calmed down and called Son. I told him I was in shock. "How could you take that painting?"
"You told me I could 3 weeks ago."
Oops. I had totally forgotten.
Did I feel like a fool. Particularly since this Son was not the kind to take anything that did not belong to him.
This feeling of needing to protect myself surfaces from time to time. I run around double locking doors, leaving lights on all night etc. It always turns out to be nothing and I feel silly afterwards. Is this normal? Or do I need professional help?

I find myself going places in the car and not wanting to get out of the car. I come back home and I don't want to get out of the car. I think it's the only time I spend reflecting. Chronic tiredness from Long Covid plus the immunosupressing meds for my Crohn's is slowing me down but everything just seems a massive effort. I am dealing with the paperwork following my father's death but it's not...

Wow, it's the middle of the week already!Today is our 11 year anniversary, so we're going out to a nice dinner. I'm losing a lot of sleep these days, hence a wonky schedule and uncomfortable feelings. But I know it will pass, eventually.I hope all of you have a peaceful day, and may good things come your way!

The reality is that you lost your husband 2 months and 3 days ago, (but who's counting?), and you are still in a state of shock. Be good to yourself, and let go and let God. (Easy for me to say, but oh so very hard to do)..........Joe....:-)
I am still in shock. It comes and goes. I just hate hurting those around me - particularly when it's not even their fault.
I'm sure you felt bad about what happened with the painting but we all forget things I'm sure he understands.
Try not to beat yourself up and you don't need to feel silly for double locking the doors and feeling the need to protect yourself a lot of people do that too...Take care...John

I think that when we have a catastrophic loss we start to think "what else that I trusted would always be there might I lose now?"
To an extent we lose trust in the world.
I remember getting totally stressed when I didn't hear from my daughter one day.
if it becomes intrusive then maybe talk to someone profesionally - but only if it really starts to bother you.
Curious fish also said he was stressed not hearing from his daughter one day. Well, this very same Son (of my husband's) who I lit into for taking the painting, the day before I was going to call 911 on because of some freaky telephone connection. Turns out he had pushed "redial" instead of something else, so his number showed up on my phone display and when I answered it, I heard some weird noises. So, on the one hand I was ready to call 911 out of concern and the next day I was ready to call the police on him for taking a picture!! Some days I do feel like I am really going off the deep end and I fear for my sanity.
So I am grateful to all of you for your support.
And Marine Widow - thanks for also putting into words what I am feeling. I want to be safe and not a target. I also have motion lights in the front of my house.
Wambu said that our husbands are not our protectors - God is. I have to remember that. It was odd in the last years while David was on oxygen. I knew that if an intruder were to break into our home, dear David could do absolutely nothing. Could not even run. But, just having him near me gave me a sense of safety. Ironic, isn't it?
