What to Do?

My step-daughter is about to lose her apartment due to non-payment of rent. Apparently it is a chronic problem. Paying the rent is her husband's responsibility since she's not working(he asked that she quit her job to raise their two children). They've asked to live here for a short time. I've had people tell me this is the biggest mistake I'll ever make. So, now I'm coming here for answers from parents who are dealing with a situation like this. Is it a bad idea to take them in? People have told me that they'll never take care of themselves if I'm there as the safety net. My son-in-law works full time and my place is small. It would be a financial hardship for me.

and you do now at this (sorry) age need to take care of you first.

I think you need to understand why their rent was not paid? That would tell you alot. AND if its not positive you can not have any more negatives in your life can you?

If you are thinking of it have them sign a rental agreement
they do this and this and this and pay this amount ... at least something plus they need to move by this date...

The only problem I see with a rental agreement is that you become an official landlord, and if you want them to leave and they won't, you have to go through court to get them evicted. I speak from experience. Once there is a formal agreement, the lessee gets all the rights and the lessor has all the responsibilities. I learned this the hard way when my son was about 15. I caught him smoking marijuana one night when I came home unexpectedly. I called the cops to come search his room and find out if there were more or other drugs there. The cops came, but said they couldn't enter his room without his permission. Go figure. Anyway, this may not at all pertain to your situation, but I thought I should mention it for your protection. BTW, my son never went on to any more drug experimentation and is a fine husband and father now.
