Barb
My little Pug is such good company! I have a pen for her in my den. It is wire and attaches to her crate. She doesn't mind staying in it at all, because she is used to it. She only stays in the pen when I am gone, and when I put her to bed. She goes in willingly ~~ I trained her to go in order to get a treat. So, when I go somewhere, I pull a treat out and she runs into her pen.
Occasionally, I miss her (she is usually under my feet--while I'm in the recliner, or in my lap) and I look for her and she has put herself to bed ~~ in her crate. LOL
I keep her puppy pads in a corner of the pen, so she knows where to go. Her water and food is in the front of her pen.
Right now, I also have my sister's little dog. When my sister comes home from rehab (she had big toe amputated), the dogs will miss each other. They 'play fight' lots of times, and then lay down right next to each other and go to sleep, either in the floor by me, or in my lap.
GO FOR IT!! Dogs have been proven to help people live longer and to help keep us from being so sad. You have to laugh at them sometimes....they can be so funny.

Thanks, everyone.
First, my mother (also a widow) works FT and she adopted a MaltiPoo last year. That dog has made such a difference in her life..and in mine! She is such a lvoing little imp and smart! Mom walks her in the morning and then when she gets home about 5 pm. Izzy sleeps most of the day and then is ready to romp and play at night before it's time for bed! And I find myself wanting to go visit every weekend so I can love on her myself!
And now that I am buying my own house (Frank never wanted a dog)I am considering adopting a small dog myself. I have perused Petfinder for local adoptions and think I will take the leap into doggy parenthood once I am setteled in the house!
