Sears and Walmart are open on Thanksgiving. I know there are people on DS that are not American, but I think this is something happening everywhere: greed on display.
Thanksgiving has always been a big holiday here, a time to spend with family. But now stores are open on that day. To them it's another way to get that last penny from consumers. How long before it's Christmas? A furniture store was open last Easter, so that's already gone.
What I'm getting to is that people are spending less time with their spouses and loved ones because in order to have a job, you must work. It's sad. Think of all the husbands and wives who will not be together on this holiday? Think of the families who will spend time, hunting down items in a store, instead of sitting at a table, enjoying each other's company, giving thanks.
And how many of them are spending their last Thanksgiving together? And what of next year if the unthinkable happens. They'll have memories of a department store.
So sad.

You are so right. It is corporate greed at its worst. The US is becoming a culture of corporate greed not one of shared humanity. The threat of losing livelihood enslaves people to do the bidding of the money mongers. Enough said, it is a disgrace. Donna
I would never consider going to the shops on any of these occasions. My own little boycott.

seems like the fat cats want to get fatter, getting too greedy to the point that the family is going down the tubes...less people getting married, more having babies out of wedlock and you wonder why people are so uncaring, they are never together....guess that is the reason when our spouses died we miss them so much, we're from a generation that marriage was a part of what we were suppose to do...lol, took me 3 times but finally found the right man...divorce about killed my mother when I got mine, and the second was no easier on her but we survived...she died in 2004 so she's not here to go through this with me, but I will survive...greed is disgusting,
I admit to getting out of the house with some family members to walk off the dinner at the store while others watched football. It was just an hour visit maybe.
I believe people make their choices and if they want to go to a department store it's their option....many don;t really get into the holiday or are away from family and can;t travel and they actually don;t celebrate a big day. And it's not the stores that made them choose that...they would not have a big celebration even if stores were closed.
I would hope some time during their day they can find the time to spend time with loved ones.
