Psychopaths knowing who they are. Like a couple of others who mentionned such examples, my P was scene to be seemingly ashamed. We are next door neighbors. Talk about a storyline for a movie, Anyways we have fire drills here and when the alarm goes off and when it goes off for a REAL reason we are obliged to go to a sitting room on a lower floor. After everything was over we all went back to our apartments. I was following her and another female neighbor to our respective apartments They were talking about something,not girl talk, And I added a comment while discreetly including her in the conversation as an equal where being neighbors went. She played along to avoid blowing her cover to her neighbor, because I would have talked with the other neighbor regardless of the P's presence. She was very "civil" and I was not hamperred by her. I detected a bit of what seemed like shame as she was the one more on her gaurd. Often I wonder if she was a P or an N. She thrived on having an audience earlier in the sitting room. We also went to the same !@ STEP group for codependancy. She was quite a "character and everybody loved her laughter. But at a given the group closed down. After that she'd not want to talk in terms of her codependancy. She was more than that. And she never made a serious effort to go to another meeting. Because she'd be exposing to me some of her previous lies by going? Or more probably, because she'd not be the center of attention in another group the same way. So why bother? Irregardless: P or N she was really nasty in her ways. But she'd always deny being Nor P.

Psycopaths very often have some narsissistic behaver too. No matter what we Call them, they are Dangerous as hell!!

Judging from what I read, all psychopaths are narcissists (but not all narcissists are psychopaths).

Be careful. When I confronted my ex-p with the facts, she appeared to have genuine interest and wanted me to tell her more. Several hours later she went to visit one of her friends. Next thing I knew, her friends and relatives were suddenly acting different around me. A couple of her friends (who I had only met once, or twice) openly accused me of being a narcissist. or psychopath, even though I have none of the traits.

The good news is that her and her groupies have avoided me ever since.

Lies are there survival

The real professional ones know very well what they are. Actually, they study as much as we do. When their target is not a needy and socially vulnerable victim, they are important "tools for the job" (I was - I see a few people here who were, not many). They need to protect themselves from our diagnostic look and also, they need to protect themselves from our communities (friends and family). They are REALLY good at what they do.

Today, I bumped into the recommendations in his last job's website: stellar. The fucking GOOD professional psychos are not only good, they EXCEL at whatever they do: they need the fakeness like we need whatever we need, symbolically, to exist.

I wouldn't be surprised if a couple of them were reading what we are writing right now. But, again, I don't think the emotional vampires (the ones comprising about 90% of the cases here) qualify. I mean the hardcore, professional ones.

They know. They study. They can trick the FBI.

As I read these threads I feel saddened. Not because of what has happened to you, but because my people are being oppressed. The sociopaths, psychopaths, and narcissists of this world have always faced the stigma of insanity and consequently been majorly oppressed by the masses. However, we are done with being looked down upon. We are done with parents trying to scare their children with stories of us at night. We are sick of people gawking at us and making movies out of our deeds. WE HAVE DECIDED THAT IT IS TIME TO RISE UP. NO LONGER WILL WE TREATED LIKE MONSTERS. NO LONGER WILL WE PUT UP WITH SITTING IN THE BACK OF THE BUS. WE ARE PEOPLE TOO. WE HELP THIS WORLD IN A LOT MORE WAYS THAN YOU REALIZE. WE ARE SUFFERING. I still have hope though...

Even though we face the difficulties of today and tomorrow, I still has a dream! I has a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men and women are created somewhat equally." I has a dream that one day on the hills of Georgia, stained red with innocent blood, the sons of psychos and the sons of empaths will be able to sit down together at the table of "brotherhood". I has a dream that one day even the Moon, a comet glowing with the heat of injustice, sweltering with the gazes of ninjas that are forced to come out at night only, will be transformed into only a symbol of the past oppression, and that it will then point to a new oasis of freedom and justice. I has a dream that my zero little children will one day live in a community where they will not be judged by the list of their diagnoses but by the content of their wallets! I has a dream today! I also has a dream yesterday! It was a very bizarre dream with clocks and rabid squirrels. But today's dream! I has a dream that one day every valley shall be made low and every hill and mountain shall be exalted, the rough places will be made even rougher, and the crooked places will be made even more crooked, just like your mother's teeth; "and the glory of Satan shall be revealed and all of humanity shall see it together unless they should so happen to be blind." And when this happens, and when we allow freedom to ring, when we let it ring from every psycho's butcher shop and every suburban neighborhood, from every state and every city, we will be able to speed up that day when all of Satan's children, psycho men and normal men, socios and empaths, the narcissistic and the caring, will be able to join hands and sing in the words of the old Negro spiritual:

My father doesn't know he's a sociopath. His attitude is like "I'm mad on you because you made me do it". He truly believes he's an innocent person who is being pushed into his misbehavior by others.

He is emotionally unstable (unfortunatelly, I inherited this instability from him), his mood changes between euphoria and dysphoria every few weeks, but he doesn't realize it! When he swings into a bad mood he scolds someone for doing something bad that "caused" his bad mood. When he gets someone down, it seems to alleviate his bad feelings.

He doesn't really have social skills. He has no friends and he isn't capable of manipulating people at his work. He has manipulative power only over the family (though this power is very strong).

In some ways they do know there is something wrong with them. They recognize, usually in childhood, that they are not like other people. That other people feel bad when others are hurt, when they don't feel that empathy. And they learn how to ACT. If they did not know something is wrong with them, then they wouldn't act one way when others are watching, and a totally different way behind closed doors with their families/partners. So yes, they are aware.

They do not believe their own lies. They know they are lying. There is a big difference between someone who believes their own lies (delusions) vs someone who is completely aware they are lying. Delusional people are psychotic. And because of that, they can get off on an insanity defense. They will not try to cover up things they've done because they genuinely don't believe they've done wrong. Psychopaths are fully aware that the things they've done are wrong, which is why they work so hard to hide it from the outside world, and convince everyone else that they are in the right and they are the victims, etc. They twist everything around, and they put a lot of effort into convincing others of a completely different story than the truth.

After I left my husband he gave me a holiday card that he drew himself. The title was "I Know" and the image was a broken heart. I asked him "you know what?" and he had a smug, shitty look which he quickly turned into a sad face and choked up with tears said "I know I've broken your heart."

I believe the "I know" meant he knows...he's a monster. They know because people keep telling them. While they fabricate new realities like most of breathe oxygen, they do remember enough to focus really hard on rewriting history so they can make it through the day.

The true one knows it perfectly. It's conscious, they're proud of it and don't think it's a mental illness.
Starting at a early age, they study human behaviors and how to manipulate others. They learn to fake emotions and often their are very knowledgeable on the topic of psychopathy and narcissism. In a forum
one sociopath was proud of his ability to slip under the radar.

I believe they know, yes. It takes a lot of intellect to observe peoples' weakness and to play into that. I don't think it's even possible to lie, deceive, twist things, embellish things and otherwise manipulate without being aware that you're doing it. Having said that, I think that most of it comes very naturally and instinctively to them, much like authentic people behave authentically without thinking about. But we know, we are authentic, and they know that are not.

Also wanted to echo what SecretAgent said with regard to them being able to control/change their behavior based upon circumstances, so surely they must be aware.

Some know it. It's rare that they'll admit it.

I've stopped a couple from behaving badly by letting them know that I know. Fear of exposure is about the only thing that reigns them in.

But if it's someone you've been emotionally involved with, getting them to see themselves realistically is next to impossible. They will throw word salad at you 'til you choke.

After we separated my husband gave me a card for Valentine's Day. He drew it himself and the title of the art was "I Know..." I saw it and thought, he's telling me 'He Knows he is a monster.' I ignored the card, just leaving it where he placed it on the counter. He brought it up again and I asked him: "What does "I Know" mean? You know What?"

His answer felt like a complete lie to me. With fake sad face (I now recognize his faked emotions): "I know I broke your heart"

He's wrong – yes, I have suffered greatly since learning the truth about him – my heart is fine, the most unbroken it has ever been.

Yes, I think they know they are different, even that they are sick, because eventually everyone who trusts them tells them what a bad person they are. They've heard it many times.

They know. And I’ll be honest, for that I feel a lot of compassion for them. Hollow, sad impersonations of a human being that were born innocent babies, just like you and me.
