i believe our role as the ''top of the food chain'' as some people call it, is to be stewards of animals and not dominate them for our own purposes. if you believe the bible, it says that once humans ate from the tree of knowledge and realized the difference between right and wrong, they were expected to make the right choices. animals by definition were innocent, since they never acquired this knowledge. that is one of the many responses i have to people who say that we are entitled to treat all other living things as commodity, because we are animals ourselves, and animals are cruel and lawless, so why shouldn't we get to inflict the same treatment on them?
i read a website once who were against animal rights in favor of what they called ''human responsibility''. it made me furious, because their philosophy was just a flimsy belief system to hide behind to rationalize their self-serving use of animals. one person complained about being judged by the humane society (or some other group) for not getting his dog fixed. his excuse was that he ''couldn't afford it''. ???? it costs $40 to get your animal fixed, and if you look really hard you can find places that will do it for free, as charity. also, if you can afford to feed a dog, take it to the vet, provide it with adequate shelter and excercise, then you can certainly afford to fix it. if you can't, then you can't afford to own a pet. this argument is tantamount to saying ''i went ahead and had my baby because i couldn't afford a condom''.
anyway, i loved your post, and i hope you don't mind me passing it along to my friends.
