I need to explain first off,,,this comes from an article I read on Yahoo early today,,,I am 63 and have worked in Social Services for a zillion years ,,,so this field is a little more flexible then pvt sector jobs ,,,still,,,it is pretty impossible for the most part ,,,I am on UC and I will ride it out till the last station,,,unless something comes my way in the mean time ,,,I don't feel that I should have to compete with a 25 year old just coming into the system,,,maybe that is the ego maniac in me ,,,but it is the way I feel,,,where I have a supervisor half my age and his total experience equals what I have forgotten over a weekend,,,
I was almost 60 years old when I went through the testing process for the school district I now work for. MOST of the applicants were easily 30-35 years younger than I was. Even though I have tons of experience, skills and a solid work ethic, I still had to prove myself. Sure, it was difficult knowing that repeated downsizings had put me in the position I was in, but, one of the first lessons we learn in life is that it isn't always fair.
I can understand your feelings about having a 25 year old manager who just learned to tie his or her shoes last week, but, I think that pretty much falls into the "ya gotta do what ya gotta do" category.
I guess I look at it like I don't care if my manager is 12; if I'm able to earn enough to keep a roof over my head, food on the table, keep the lights on and a few drops of gas in my car, I've got a fighting chance.
