There was an outstanding article in the NYT yesterday of unemployed seniors (mostly people at least 10 to 15 years out from SS retirement ).. the jist of it being, as bad as normal rates of unemployment are ..people in this bracket are massive,, possibly triple the basic numbers.. the reasons are logical,,, older workers cost much more to employ and employers will pay younger workers a fraction of what more experienced people get paid and there are much larger numbers willing and able,,

Even Congressional advocates say that age discrimination is a joke in this economy...despite all the screaming any statistical proof that support this ,,
I did fax out the follow up letter ,,which was very good if I say so myself.... I would at least call me, if I got this letter,,

mycrofft, this is an absurd situation if you have to go through all these hoops just for a part-time salvation army position.

Where are all the mid tier positions, that are not executive level and aren't at the low end?

That is part of the insanity and frustration behind the entire effort ,,, I have not thrown in the towel yet,,, I too can't believe that they are making this so damn hard for just a part time position and this is at a social services agency and not a private company,,

i agree for part time work, why is it getting harder and harder? i went for a macys position about 3 times for different ones but i did hear back from them and was never chosen for their positions. they were all part time work!

its depressing looking at these job boards when u dont qualify for anything - a simple job wants 2 yrs exp and they wont even train you so u can learn! whatever happen to learning?

The other part is ,, what they are asking for I can already do in my sleep,,, and it would require minimum if any training and only to the extent of learning their particular paperwork,,, everything else is basically hitting the ground at a run,,,, so what is their problem ??,,,do they think I am going to drop dead while at the job ???

I don't think this strategy is working very well,,,, time to soon change course,, will wait a few more days ,,,

Been reading almost daily articles in the NYT with regard to both elder and youth unemployment, The rate of unemployment for youth is over 20% and elder is almost double that ,, what you have in the middle is the squeeze between the middle of these two with fewer positions being offered, at lower wages, limited or no benefits, and f/t being converted to p/t'ers. Statistics are meaningless if you change rules to fit a profile as in we no longer count people who have dropped off U/C roles and those who are not eligible are also not counted as they have become invisible ,,, so,,, 7.6% labor department unemployment rate on the national average in meaningless and more to the point is insulting..
