Long ago I worked as a State employee and the work we did,,or shall I say I did was very focus and felt that made a difference,,,the wages were fair, the benefits were good and appreciated and very needed ,,..and then the wheel turned and my agency was contracted,,,this is what happened almost immediately,,,the numbers of employees were cut substantially to the point where the workload became pretty overwhelming and soon became ridiculous,,where quality suffered and people entered and existed like a revolving door Macy's...wages where cut by about 15% immediately and soon rose to 25%.. There was no pension,,a lousy 401k was made available that was more a liability than anything else, minimal work standards were encouraged work only to the contract ,,,Health Insurance was cut to the minimum,,,no choice offered at all,,you took what you were given or go somewhere else ,,Oversight by the State became hyper-critical for online staff assessment were done by multiple monitors ,,,and nothing was ever right,,CEO's and top manager made a fortune in this arrangement.
That my friend(s) are the great advantages found in private sector contracted employment.

As a somewhat related side note, the town I live in pays the trash guys $65,000 a year for a 35 hour work week and full benefits. Should the town consider privatizing? The structure of so many things is broken. Right now the cost of paying the pensions of NYC policemen is more than the cost of running the department.
