I'm new to the group, but not on this site (was on here for divorce issues). But today, I was fired a a really stupid mistake.
I work for a company of college bookstores and they were closing 40 of their stores by the end of the month. My store was one of them. We essentially had to be out by March 31st and I was scrambling and stressing to get things done. In the bustle of everything, I lost $200 cash from our safe fund. Thinking I could handle it and pay the money out of my pocket at some point, I kept it to myself.
Today, someone from Loss Prevention was out to oversee removal of our security system, but I had no idea he was going to audit our safe. So I made the stupid mistake of trying to cover it up. Sure enough, he asked enough questions that I ended up just fessing up to everything. I still offered to pay it back (which was to be taken out of money I was being reimbursed for signs I purchased with my own money). Regardless of that and my clean history with the company (which I had been with for 12 years, they still chose to terminate. And I therefore lost my severance package I was supposed to receive after the store closed.
I feel absolutely horrible and I am such an idiot for thinking I could fix this on my own. I let my bosses down and I let my employees down because now they have to finish everything without me.
I don't know what I'm looking for on here. Advice will help. Maybe someone to tell me what a screw up I am. I don't know. Mostly, I needed to tell my story. In the hopes that maybe someone can relate. I didn't mean for it to happen and I'm going to have to carry this with me forever. I've always been a good person and I've always tried to do the right thing. But I don't know if there is any coming back from this.
Thanks to anyone that listens.

Can you identify these rom-coms from just a screenshot from the middle of the films? This is a multiple choice quiz so even if you're not entirely sure you can always take a guess and at least have a 25% chance of getting it right anyway, so why not have a go?! https://www.buzzfeed.com/alysaurus688/rom-com-screenshot-trivia-quiz

What would your severance entail? If it's a few weeks of pay, my suggestion is to take a deep breadth, move on and look for what's new for you
As far as the money shortage from the safe fund, I think firing you for the $200 shortage was bullshit. People make mistakes, and it's even easier to make mistakes when you're under the stress of losing your freakin' job!!! As far as I'm concerned, your ex-employer just drummed up this stupid little termination to get out of giving you your severance package. You're not an idiot - your ex-employer is full of crap!
Most companies only care about their own self-interests. In spite of all that "...our employees are our best asset..." crap, they could really give a rat's ass about us, so you won't hear what a screw-up you are from ME! You're not the problem - the greedy, low-life corporations are!
PLEASE do not beat yourself up over this! People make mistakes. You lost $200, for God's sake - it's not like it was two hundred THOUSAND dollars. Forgive yourself and then try to move on. If I were in your shoes, I would maybe even have a free consultation with an employment rights attorney about the termination as it relates to the loss of your severance package. You might be able to get your severance restored.
You sound like a good person. Please don't let something like this ruin your life. There are better opportunities in store for you. Although I know it may not seem like it now, this may turn out to be a blessing in disguise for you.
Wishing you the best. Hang in there. A lot of people, including myself, can say "...been there, done that..." when it comes to being wrongfully terminated. You will get through this.
