Hi,

My twins are now 18 months and I am beginning to get a little worried about them talking. They of course do the twin talk although not as much as they used to. They do say words mixed in with babble but they aren't talking yet. I know they say twins talk later than a single baby but I am still concerned. How old were your twins when they really began to speak? What are some ways you encouraged them to start talking? My kids point to everything and want to know what everything is and they learn it because when you ask for it they bring it over or do what you ask them. They know their different body parts like ears and eyes and hair and things like that but I just want them to start talking. Is it still too early? Thanks for the help.

I wish I would have seen this post sooner! My boys are 26 months. One of them is talking up a storm and the other isn't talking at all. There are some really important things to look at regarding speech. First of all, expressive speech (pointing, taking your hand and walking you over to something) is a very good sign. Also, if they have their own words for things (i.e. they say "murk" everytime they are asking for "milk") that is a good sign. My twin that isn't talking is the very active twin and I've heard active kids can talk later as well. I wouldn't worry yet unless you see signs like not making eye contact, avoiding social interaction, etc. Talk to your doctor at the 24 month checkup if you are still concerned. At that point they can do the hearing test followed by the speech pathologist if needed.

I agree wilth Zelda. My boys are 23 months and just started "talking" up a storm. My Nephew whose a singleton and 29 months talks much less than my boys. I think they all have their pace.

I feel if they have interest in talking at 18 months that's all they are looking for. I know that the 12-18 month period there teds to be a regression in speech that picks up closer to the second birthday.
