I do not really have any advice. We did use one for our son until he was about 2 years old. We did not have any problems. I have bought bumpers for my twins as well and plan on using the bumpers when they start sleeping in their cribs at 2-3 months old. Good luck!

I am 28 weeks too and have been doing the same research. Right now it is not recommended by SID foundations because it can cause SIDS.

I used bumpers with my twins til they started standing on them. I found that in general it helped keep the kids from getting thier legs stuck in the bars during the night and was more helpful then not. Always be vigilant in the use of anything placed in the crib but I wouldn't get overly paranoid about it.

Oh wow!! We HAVE to have bumpers!! My boys roll around sooo mcuh while they sleep!! We were waking up several times a night because their litle chunky legs would get stuck in between the bars of the crib. NOT FUN at 1 am!!

At the prenatal classes we took at our local Health Unit when I was pregnant with my b/g twins, they said that bumpers can cause SIDS. The women explained that even if your babies don't roll into the padding, it can restrict air flow inside the crib. She said that the breathable ones are super if your baby rolls face-first into the pad because they won't be smothered, but those still restricts air flow inside the crib. She said as time goes on, they can use the pads as a step to help them take a head-first dive onto the floor.

She said that there has never been a baby die from having their leg or arm caught in the bars of a crib, but many babies have died in cribs with bumpers. They are still completely legal, so there are people who are definately going to still use them, but it's one of those things where we chose to safe, rather than sorry.

Nothing but a tightly fitted crib sheet should be in that crib with the babies.

I didn't use them for a while, but like the other ladies said, their legs were getting stuck between the bars, so I put them in. Plus, now they are able to lift and move their heads on their own. I think the breathable ones are a good option though.

Thanks for the advice ladies! I'm still unsure of what I'll do...I may let my pediatrician's advice be the deciding factor. I did buy a fan to have the air circulate in the room since I also read that it was extremely beneficial. These babies are going to be one heck of a learning process and will definitely keep my husband and I on our toes!

I used bumpers with all three of mine. My sister came one day and she came unglued when she saw them. She said my nephew got caught under his when he was little because he rolled around so much. She was so upset even thinking that I was using them. I then started to look into it and I was told they do not need them. I used them in the begining and then got rid of them so I am on both sides.

We have one now with one twin who is in his crib. He was getting his leg really jammed in the slats, horrible crying and bruising. But they are also a year old now, plus we have a ceiling fan. We have the mesh ones...it doesn't stop heads from getting bruises as the fall, but it stops the legs. I wouldn't use them until the babies are much older, tho. You don't need them to start. I was given mixed advice between different factions.

You know I ended up using them after awhile because the twins would hit their heads on the bars and I hated that. Also, I did a lot of research on SIDS and there are A LOT of reasons that cause SIDS. Not just one. Some the precautions I took were a fan, no blankets, and we decided to buy organic mattresses. I read fascinating articles based in New Zealand that said they believed a lot SIDS cases were from all the toxins found in the mattresses themselves.

There is so much stuff out there that causes us all so much stress and worry. My mom always says, "Make your decision and trust it. Don't second guess it." Whatever you decide, I am sure your babies will be fine.

I was told by their pedi not to use them because of SIDS. My twins are now 16 months old and still sleep without bumpers.
