Turner syndrome encompasses a number of chromosomal abnormalities, of which monosomy X, is the most common. It occurs in 1 out of every 2,500 female births. Instead of the normal XX sex chromosomes for a female, only one X chromosome is present and fully functional. In Turner syndrome, female sexual characteristics are present but underdeveloped.
But soon after birth ovaries in baby affected by classical TS can not produce minimal concentrations of their own estrogen that are otherwise needed for survival of eggs in ovaries, consequently all eggs get destroyed by 2 years of age and ovaries are turned in fibrotic streaks. Periods are only result of substitute hormonal treatment and during periods eggs do not get released in fallopian tube.
There are exceptions to the rule, girls with mosaic TS can have some remaining eggs in ovaries to their teenage years or even adulthood.
I think that makes her the 3% of the 5% of the 4%.
I have a third mosaic TS and my ovaries are/were functional.
Generally though the findings seems to be that with TS and other chromosomal imballances,translocations, etc effecting the X chromosome that the resultant or produced eggs (where eggs are indeed produced)-that the eggs themseleves are chromosomally incomplete.
The theory will tell you that these eggs, will often result in XO or YO(not viable for life) embryos.
Those embryos then have a 0-3% chance of survival.
However, from my own findings and those of 3 other's I have had contact with who have produced eggs(one with translocation, the other two with less than 15% mosaic TS) that the resultant embryos were chromosomally chaotic, meaning that the effect of chromosomal anomolies were seen across all chromosomes, with abscent, monosomy, trisonomy and more obscure results, most often with multiple chromosomal defects in each embryo.
And the rate of success was 0-3%.
In 5 women with mosaic TS who I've been in touch with online, all of whom had ovaries and had begun menstruation spontaneously, none were successful with IVF as yet, although two are going to try again.
I did 3IVFs back to back, we'd 24 embryos, 3 were normal female embryos, the rest totally unviable for life.
One of the embryos survived to make it to emrbyo transfer, and she is now 15months old.
The chances of that are infathomably small.
I'm now (supposed to be, but maybe my ovaries will surprise us again) going through ovarian failure (menopause) and at 30 I think I'm most of the way through it, though as I'm still breastfeeding it's harder to tell for now.
Most TS girls go through ovarian failure at a very young age, indeed before they enter puberty.
Having ovaries is no guarantee for any sort of reproductive capability.
