Turner Syndrome Support Group
Turner syndrome encompasses a number of chromosomal abnormalities, of which monosomy X, is the most common. It occurs in 1 out of every 2,500 female births. Instead of the normal XX sex chromosomes for a female, only one X chromosome is present and fully functional. In Turner syndrome, female sexual characteristics are present but underdeveloped.
My daughter is a Turner. She is 12 years old, and her endocronoligist started her on estrace about 8 months ago. I am noticing that she is spotting somewhat. Is this normal?? Don't want to call the doctor yet...just wanted to see if anyone else has gone thru this. Thanks

Estrace is an estrogen given to her so that her breasts will begin development. I called her dr and she told me that spotting was normal when taking estrogen. I just got really nervous about it.

Thank you for your concern. Did you ever take estrogen?? Just want to know if someone else had this effect while taking estrogen. My daughter was diagnosed when she was about 6 months. She has been on growth hormone since she was about 6, and has had great improvement on her growth. But now that she is going into the teen years, I'm just worried about the next stages in her life.

Hey, i was diagnosed with TS when i was 17, so I understand the hardship. Its important that your doctor puts her on both estrogen and progesterone. These two medications go together with each other. Heres some info. http://biomedx.com/bones/page10.html

This might be a strange question, so I am asking you guys. I'm kind of embarrassed to ask my daughter's doctor. I know the Estrace will start her period and cause her breasts to develop, but will she also go through other puberty changes such as hip development, under arm hair, acne, mood swings, etc....? Will she have menstrual cramps like so many other girls do?

Your daughter will possibly get mood swings with the medication, but as far as the pubery thing goes, it varies from woman to woman. There will be more likely some pubic hair growth, but underarm hair growth that depends. Some TS girls get their period and cramps and some don't. Spotting is sometimes occurs, and that is a good sign that your daughter may be able to produce children in the future through different methods. Breast development more likely occurs, but will still be somewhat underdeveloped. Its good that they started her on estrace early. I was started at 16..so your daughter has a great start.. :)
