I would like to say it was from kick boxing and marital arts, but I stopped going year before this started.

My number was up. I got sick was something bad like the flu and it appears my body attacked my nerves instead of the infection. I suffered temporary facial paralysis, then the pain started, and has been constant ever since.

I had bronchitis for nearly three months (I was 48) and then I got TN. I lost sensation in my tongue on the same side that the original strikes occurred.

There are many doctors who want to trace TN to infection. Whether bacterial or viral to begin with, I don't know.

I have both kinds of TN on both sides of my face and on my skull. I don't want to run off to get a surgery to relieve the lightening strike type stuff, just to discover it does nothing for the constant boring and vice-like pain on my temples and jaws. Some say that MVD surgery can make the Atypical TN worse. NO THANK YOU !!!

Not sleeping. It hurts to lay on my face. ugh......

I got TN and ATN at the age of 39. I suffered from frequent severe migraines since puberty. I believe my TN was brought on by severe stress. ALcoholic and abusive, lieing, cheating bastard of an ex, who simply broke me. I caught him at the hotel with my sister after my brothers wedding and they just laughed at me, no remorse. A few years later he had his whore stay at my house,in my bed while the kids and I were on vacation. They were kind enough to take pictures and videos on my sons camera. Further lies led to losing the house, him having a few DUI's ending in jail as a convicted felon. I raise my children on my own with no support from him. I only clean up his messes after he does one stupid thing or another to his children. Severe stress I believe is the root of my TN

I've had chronic migraines since age 9, so I attributed the TN to the migraine problem; however, I was diagnosed with Lupus last year and was told I have probably had it the disease for 15+ years. So, I'm not so sure now if it's the Lupus or the migraines, or if all three are linked. I read a lot of responses stating dental work to be a possible cause. Someone else stated martial arts, another talked of a back injury as a possibility. Really, I think it's all of the above and then some. I believe it's damage to the nerves, caused from various incidents depending on the individual.

I associate my case with a poorly executed headstand during yoga. The onset aligns with extreme compression of my head and neck during a ridiculus yoga pose. It also aligns with the area where I've had two episodes of Bells Palsy over the past 10 years.

I have a long history of chronic sinus infections. My tn started after a bad infection (went through 3 rounds of antibiotics) and also having some dental work done. Don't know if it caused it but that's what was going on during that time. I do have increased attacked when my sinuses become inflamed. I have both A-typical and regular TN. It started on my left side but after about 2 years it has also moved to my right side - although it is still worse on the left side.

i sooo hear you about the dentist. i recently had to let my dentist pull one of my very last molars because i cannot handle the treatment of root canal and crown etc. here are some tips that help me. i take pain meds right before i go. my dentist understands the pain so she scheds extra time for my cleanings so i get lots of breaks and limp through the appt. she also prescribes a short amount of steroids to settle down the inflammation after she does anything that gets me all jazzed up. i also like they being a woman her hands are smaller so easier on my mouth too. so make sure you have a dentist that understands this condition and does everything to help you through> blessings for pain free days for you!

So interesting to read everyone's comments here.. My pain started out of the clear blue sky and woke me up in the middle of the night. It was three days after a really stressful accident happened at my work, which actually ended in the individual passing away a couple weeks later. I had also had a bad case of strep throat a couple weeks before this. Not sure if that has any connection or if emotional stress could be a cause or if it's neither one.

I cannot say that anything attributed to my TN. I was on vacation and thought maybe I was getting an ear infection. Made an appointment with my doctor for when I got home. Was walking through the Tin Cannery in Monterey and was sent to my knees screaming with pain. Called my doctor and she knew right away what I had and made an appointment with a neurologist. I ended up going home and was in the ER that evening. After some poking around on my face the ER doctor set off an attack and gave me a shot of something that "eased" the pain and called a neurologist and was prescribed my first dosage of carbamazepine. The rest is a very painful history.

no although i have had a lot of hard knocks to my head. not that anything showed up on mri....my mom also thinks my grandmother developed in late in life but we don't know for sure. i have had symptoms since i was at least five and have been treated for migraines my whole life which did not work. the anticonvulsant meds gave me some relief along with narcotic and stress b vitamins and for some reason the beta blocker bp med i take at night helps too...and avoiding triggers so my diagx was based on that.....now nine yrs later and a motor cortex implant and some botox injectoins for second neuro condition on opposite side of face. i am managing much better. such a process for each of us individually. one day at a time and blessings for pain free days for us all.

Mine was caused by a surgery I had on my scalp to remove a precancerous birth mark. The trigeminal nerve got stuck in the scar tissue and for a long time nobody knew what was wrong with me other than the fact that I was in horrible pain. At first TN wasn't even a consideration for me because of my age(I'm 17) but then it took my family and I doing some more research and talking to my neurologist and doing a nerve block and trying different medications to figure out that I do indeed have TN.

I was sitting on a porch swing , reading with my son, when the swing broke, and as we fell, I landed first, and my son involuntarily gave me a tremendous "head-butt" to my right side as he landed. TN started soon after that.

My dentist (not anymore) started a root canal and broke the file off in my tooth. Closed it up and sent me to an endodontist. Endodontist removed the file.

I believe i was the trauma from the root canal that did me in. If I could find the dentist I would like to let her know how she runied me. But....I try to just bare the pain and move on. Nothing good would come out of contacting that dentist. It's not like it would go away if I would.

I have similar symptoms, pain started after I saw a dentist for a root canal. I've had moderate luck with Lyrica.
