As soon as you get to see a neurologist he or she will most likely put you on Tegratol. The first time I started taking Tegratol it took about 3 weeks for it to work. When it did kick in I was pain free for 6 glorious months!! Unfortunately early May my pain came back so I'm back on Tegratol. It's working again but not 100% If I put anything in my mouth, press my lips together, or run my tongue across my molars I'll get a mild pain that feels hot on the right side of my face but pain is mild (tolerable). Is your pain in your mouth as well? Like a tooth pain you've never felt before in your life?

Thankfully NO! No tooth pain or anything around my mouth. It's all just on the right side of my face, under my eye. But the pain is horrible. One minute I'm fine then I get sudden severe shooting pains to where I'm almost in tears, it gives way to a dull ache but the shooting pains happen every few minutes. Then the area under my eye usually starts to swell. Some days I wake up and the area where I got hit will be purple and swollen. Mind you this happened back in February. smh I can't put my face like up towards the shower because the falling water hurts, putting moisturizer, makeup, basically just touching around my eye usually induces the pain. It's been so bad that sometimes I actually become nauseous. I've had a lot (sports related) injuries but THIS is by far the worst and most debilitating.... I hope they prescribe the meds you mentioned. I need some type of relief....

I'm almost positive your neurologist will put you on Tegratol and it does work. It's an anti seizure medication, but there's side affects that kind of suck! The biggest one is Tegratol does damage the liver, so you'll have to get frequent blood tests to make sure your liver is okay. The next one is makes you feel in a haze because it causes sleepiness. May cause suicidal thoughts (I've never had suicidal thoughts). Either way it's worth it. My TN is the third branch (mandibular branch) I thought for 2 years I was having dental issues, to find out I have this crazy disease that can't be cured! Anyway Tegratol is the #1 medicine used to treat TN. I think you'll be happy with the results. It takes about 2-3 weeks to start working. How come you can't see a Neurologist till December?

I lost my log-in info!! So I'm late with a reply. I'm back though. lol I can't see a neurologist until December because apparently they're so backed up there aren't taking new patients. Honestly though after the past few days I'm tempted to make a trip to the ER with my complaints of pain to see if they can put me in earlier. I've started to have pain in my jaw! Like where the upper & lower meet, the 'corner'? I guess.... It feels like I got punched in the jaw, on the same side as where I got hit just lower. It's a throbbing pain and I can't open my mouth very wide. And I can *feel* a nerve twitching around my upper jaw in the same area! I recently had s dentist appt (regular check before this pain even started) and I have no cavities. It's not the debilitating shocking pain I feel under my eye where I got hit, but like a dull ache. And the entire right side of my face is swollen. This is day 2. Honestly I'm very sad because of what I've read about this disorder/disease/whatever it is. Odds of it not ever going away. It took 3 seconds to change up my life. On Labor Day weekend I went to an amusement park with my husband and kids and after 1 roller coaster ride with my daughter I thought my head was going to explode. It just sucks. I've always been active and have never had any debilitating illnesses or anything preventing me from having fun & doing things....but right now it seems this TN is really kicking my @$$. :-/
