Trigeminal neuralgia, or Tic Douloureux, is a neuropathic disorder of the trigeminal nerve that causes episodes of intense pain in the eyes, lips, nose, scalp, forehead, and jaw. Trigeminal neuralgia is considered by many to be among the most painful of conditions.

I don't remember whether I posed this question before so forgive me if I have. Does anyone else experience a strange smell from carbamazapine. Periodically during the day I smell an odd smell. At first I thought it was in my house but I smell it everywhere. I never had this before taking this drug.
I intend to ask the neurologist the next time I see him.

I am also on Tegretol and no, I do not have that side effect. I hope it is a good smell! lol. Good luck

thanks Actually it is not a good smell but thankfully it does not happen all the time.
I'm going to start cutting down on my meds as I think i might be in remission.

I have never experienced a strange smell. I get very dizzy from it but no strange smells.

Sometimes yes I do get strange smells - kinda musty and I also have found that some "things" may not smell quite like they should. I also have altered tastes on some foods - there are some foods right now that I cannot eat due to the altered taste of them.

I'm glad I'm not the only one with this experience. The strange thing is it can happen soon after taking a dose or when it's time to take my next dose. The smell is hard to describe
I have decided to put up with it as I am still getting the odd break through pain in my tongue and so I'm back on my regular dose.

Yes i get that strange almost mettalic smell . Im on 1200 mg of tegretol.

I'm on only 400 mg a day and hope I can stay that way.
I see the neurologist next week and will see what he recommends.
If this low dose can keep me from getting those awful attacks I think I will stay on the drug despite the smell.

You are lucky you can tolerate it. Im walking into walls. stagger looks like I have two may glasses of wine.

Good luck to on the tregretol. But one of the downsides is bone marrow suppression. Keep the Vit d levels normal

Thanks for that judelew. I had not heard of bone marrow suppression but I know the liver has to be checked every six months.
It is scary to be on something that could cause serious problems yet what to do? Eating is beginning to botherme again but then I'm under a lot of stress which may be contributing to this.
