Of course trich is a bloody medical condition! It's not a habit, it's not an addiction, although pulling certainly becomes a habit as well as a "need" and our brain does become addicted to it.

after katie told him exactly what it was, and the fact that she has been struggling with this disorder for 15 years, he called it bs!!!
any decent human being apologizes at that point... and even if he still doesn't believe its true, he should shut up about it, because he's talking to someone who actually has it, and is clearly sensitive about it!
Trich is harder to kick than a habit, it is something we will always struggle with at some level. Yes, the repetitive nature of it does develop into a habit, but that need to pull or pick is part of our makeup and seems as normal to us as scratching an itch.
And we certainly wish we could "just stop", wouldn't that be nice?
