My story with hair pulling & picking
So I'm super nervous to post this. I've never really spoken much about my journey with this before but I think it's time to speak to people that are dealing with similar issues so I don't feel so alone.
My obsession with playing with my hair goes back to when I was probably 6 or 7 years old. I would be sitting in front of the TV and tie knots in small sections of hair and then rip them out. I remember this feeling really satisfying while at the same time being aware that it was breaking and damaging my hair. I don't remember continuing this behaviour or playing with my hair until I was about 12. I then became obsessed with scratching my scalp and just generally running my hands through my hair. People would sometimes ask my Mother if I had headlice and this made me so embarrassed. My parents would constantly just tell me to stop playing with my hair.
Then when I was around 13 or 14 I started straightening my hair a lot. This started causing me to get split ends. In time I would find brittle strands and run my fingernails down the shaft to make it split even more. I found the rough texture of this between my fingers so satisfying. I was breaking the brittle hairs off once I played with them.
Over time and more recently, I have been pulling my hair out as well as breaking off spilt ends, predominantly at the back of my head. I find the coarser hairs much more gratifying to pull out and it gives me such a sense of relief. I hate myself for doing it and know that I am going to end up with frizzy sparse hair at the back but I just can't seem to stop. I have discussed things with my partner multiple times and he tries to be as supportive as possible, but I don't think he sees it as a disorder. I've tried things to distract my hands but I can't seem to kick the habit. It seems to happen more when I'm anxious, nervous or bored or sometimes even subconsciously. I am open to any suggestions or tips that people have found helpful. I'm not sure if anyone else has had a similar story to mine, I feel like I've lived with shame and embarrassment for a really long time but glad to know there's other people who understand what I'm going through. xo
