Are you part of beating trich support group here on DS?
There are a lot of people who can give you support, and help you, and please, know you are not alone feeling this way.
Hang in there, you are doing ok.
The people who tell you to "just stop" are uneducated. If they knew the truth about trichotillomania, they wouldn't tell you to just stop. Have you heard of the TLC website? http://www.trich.org/
Next time people to tell you to just stop, either point them to this web site, or explain that you have a medical condition, and it's not so simple as to just stop. Tell them that 1 in every 50 people has this condition, that you are not weird.
Lots of hugs to you Katie, I know how hard it is.
Instead of "why can't I stop?" I want you to look in the mirror and say, "I CAN and WILL stop!!" I want you to count your achievements no matter how small. If you pull a hair, it is just one hair -- not 20. Keep those hands busy and use barriers to prevent pulling in case they end up near your hair.
There is strength in numbers and we are all here for you. I find reading the posts here help me sooooo much! Knowing you have the support of others is so empowering!
