According to the book 'The Hair Pulling Problem- The Complete Guide To Trichotillomania" by Fred Penzel. The drugs taken for ADHD can trigger more pulling by overstimulating your nervous system. Ritalin, Adderall, and Dexedrine. Other results might include picking of the skin, or biting fingernails from the stimulation the meds are giving. The same goes for Effexor, a drug sometimes prescribed for hair pulling. SSRI-type antidepressants can also have stimulating effects on the nervous system of certain people. This can lead to increased pulling, along with insomnia and feelings of nervousness. As with all medications, the effects are different for everyone. Being aware of the effects the drugs may have is of importance, but not to dismiss the drugs due to the side effects that may not occur.
The book also talks about diet, different forms of therapy and relaxation techniques.
