My suggestion is the NC Board certification group for doctors in the state. They won't be able to give you any details on the "Trans-Friendly" part but they should be able to give you contact information on Plastic Surgeons and how to contact them, from there I suspect it will largely be a let your hands do the walking. I did a web search and there is a place that lists 3 medical centers that are trans friendly, but that is about it. Unless you believe that they are going to do some form of invasive check, if your ID says male, just say the VA messed up a Gynocomastia repair. It's a common one for men to get fixed so heck, use that to your advantage if you can... kinda what it was in a way.

Don't know if you have a VA rep that might be able to help you get an extension, i've only had to deal with the VA so far for student loans and my GI bill but they are suppose to represent you for anything. It can't hurt to ask, but if they are needing to fix something that was there mistake, then they should give you the time you need. If you feel like you can't get the surgury in the time they gave you, seek out a Rep for VEts and see if they can help get you an extension. You shouldn't have to give to many details and like Wyndwytch said you can tell them it's a Gynocomastia repair. But it's worth a try to see if you can get your VA rep can get you more time.

Thanks - a wonderful supportive friend spent part of a day searching online and asking around from among her LGBQ friends, and was able to get me a nice list of suggestions.

The hard part is finding good surgeons who are willing to accept the pittance the VA is willing to pay to get this done, and can fit me in within the timeframe permitted.

I'm trying to get an extension - but they claim they sent the letter out previously(to the wrong address) and called(wrong number) repeatedly before, so now they are not willing to allow an extension - even though I had correctly updated both my phone and address, they selected the old ones to try contacting me. THIS time, I called them repeatedly, until I got hold of a live person to send me a copy of the letter - it never arrived - to my correct address. I have already let my VA "Primary care physician" know my 1st choice of surgeons, so now I wait to hear back on whether or not that surgeon will do it.

The headache is coaxing a surgeon to fit you in, within a limited frame of time, AND accept ONLY the small amount the VA offers to pay them as TOTAL payment in full. Not just the surgeon's fee, but for EVERYTHING, the OR, all the support people, etc. Had gotten one who accepted - until it sank in that the money the VA was talking about paying was for the entire thing - all costs; not just what the surgeon was going to pocket. Soon as that sank in, the surgeon refused.

It is a very short list, in my state. But at least there are a few options.
