This community is here to support and help the large population of transgender people. If you or anyone you know identify as transgender, this is the place to share your feelings and experiences and speak with others who are going through similar things in their lives.
After much fear and hiding who I truly am I finally couldn't take keeping secrets any longer. I felt it was time to let my family know how I've been feeling about my gender over the years.
So, I told my parents. I expected them to not be so understanding. I figured I'd be greeted with silence and strange looks, but instead I was hugged and told I am loved no matter what gender I am.
I asked my parents to call me by my chosen name instead of my birth name. They are really trying to get it right.
They told me they accept the fact they have a son and not a daughter. "You're ours no matter what and we love you," my dad said. I was shocked.
These last few days since I have come out have been great. I feel closer to my parents now.
I also told my psychiatrist about how I am feeling and he was very understanding. He asked me if I plan to transition and said he has multiple transgender patients and he would get information for me.

Sometimes our fears are worse than the facts - so glad this was true in your case.
Now, you are freer to be yourself - and in a safe home, too, where you are loved for who you are. :)
