Temporomandibular joint disorder, or TMJ syndrome, is an acute or chronic inflammation of the temporomandibular joint, which connects the lower jaw to the skull. The disorder and resultant dysfunction can result in significant pain and impairment.

So I have been reading A LOT about tmj to learn about to help myself. Anyhow their seems to be conflicting information about tmj discs, IF the discs are displaced towards the front can these discs be recaptured with an appliance? If they cannot be recapture can your body adjust and make new discs or does it always get worse?
Thanks,florida

It takes a long time, but the structures do adapt over time, loud pops become soft clicks, things mellow out. Appliance therapy does seem to give the jaw a chance to heal by taking the clenching forces in sleep that are prevalent in us tmj'rs with some disc issues. Without an appliance though i was just caught in a downward spiral of joint noise and all sorts of weird and awful pain.

Time is a huge factor when taking into consideration whether the disks can be recaptured or not. Usually, after 6 mo...it's extremely hard to recapture disks with appliances. Anterior Repositioning Orthodics can recapture disks when used in the early stages...these can be very effective. You can live without disks, but there needs to be the proper stable jaw position, and stable bite as well as taking into consideration the muscle function. Usually the people that understand this are Neuromuscular dentists, that practice Functional Jaw Orthodontics. Look on the ICCMO website, and see who's in your area. Also, check to see if they do FJO, and NM dentistry----and specialize in TMD treatment. You may be able to find someone off the LVI webpage as well. (Las Vegas Institute).

I have only anterior portion left of one disc and paper thin disc on the other side. functional jaw orthotics have helped me pain wise.

My 6mo twin DD's are EBF and just started rice cereal on the first. Everything has been going fine except this morning one of them had a diaper rash (lots of redness around her anus). I read this as one of the signs of an allergy. BUT I did just buy a different brand diaper yesterday (which they have used randomly before w/no issues). Do you think its the cereal or the diaper? Im ready to start...
