Struck me... 'hairs' are dead and cannot be destroyed so when they talk of cochlear 'hairs' i think it's more like nerve endings they are referring to.
Furthermore, how can they say 'damaged' when people get tinnitus for days after loud music and then it goes away? What makes some temporary and some permanent? Would ear-hair sprain, strain or bending maybe be more accurate? i wonder.
What I'm trying to get at is this:
maybe those hairs, nerves, are 'pinched' like our other nerves get, If you've ever had a pinched nerve it can take years to fix completely if ever, and that with taking a lot of care not to further injure them.
And if that is the case, maybe there are meds that would help strengthen are perhaps straighten or de-pinch them. maybe thats what the prednisone does as a streroid - help the hair's strengthen up?
Does anyone know exactly why they gives us prednisone and other steroids, what they are supposed to be doing to help us?? I never was able to figure that out... do they help us generally 'heal' better and if that is the case, what is healing.. our hairs?? hair doesn't heal, it grows out, so what the heck are we talking about exactly if somebody knows what it's all about these so-called 'hairs' i would appreciate it.

As far as nerves ; there is a condition called susacs. The small blood vessels of the eyes and ears are affected(inflammation) causing hearing and sight problems. I have Sjogrens and I also have susacs. Ocular migraine(temporary blin in center of eye and the volume of my ears goes up and down;just recently acquired this ringing.
Now my hyperacusis is back, crumbling a paper bag can scare the hell out of me again, and my tinnitus seems to be back to just a little bit worse than my pre-hearing loss episode. More 'crickets' than 'ringing' for the past couple of days for the first time since this began.
So I ask... what about these hairs.. how did my hairs suddenly get better to any degree, it doesn't make sense except in one way, could it be tinnitus is when these hairs touch each other, and by using my sinus cleaner or sneezing or by fluke i moved some of the hairs off each other?
When i think of sound and hair, i think of movement of the hair, not actual destruction, not even detachment. I don't think the loudest speakers in the world could blow hairs off someone's head for example.....it must be hairs touching each other and these hairs are nerve endings that maybe can be made 'stronger' and as a result stand more erect, or in their natural pattern.
Lateedah, did you ringing come on as a result of loud noise, medication, a virus...or you don't know.
The original hypothisis was that tinnitus was the result of damaged hairs in the ear. These damaged hairs were/are not repairable or do not get better. It was believed the damage resulted from exposure to loud noises(bombs, long term loud music, etc). The only treatment found is/was masking the noise or habituating to it or both.
New science is just beginning to scratch the surface of what is actually the cause of tinnitus and if there are better or alternate treatments besides masking. Also how much more expensive they can make treatments.
I do believe that certain drugs/remedies can lower/raise the level of tinnitus a person experiences(not that it temporarily repairs inner hair damage).
On a lighter note does anyone wanna hear my conspiracy theory regarding tinnitus?
Now tell me why I am getting a few quiet days here and there? I have had this condition for years. At first I had many quiet days through any given week. Then after a few years none.
Now all of a sudden this week I had the loudest t. I have had ever. Then I got a terrible sinus infection, very stuffy nose, swollen face. I took antihistamines to turn the fosset off. I have had three quiet days this week. How could this be???
Take those "better days" when you can get them, and give thanks to the Lord for them... I wish each of your days to come is quieter than the one before.. Thats my hope and my prayer for every person with T, no matter who or where they are. No one deserves this,,,,, no one , bob
Also, my rheumatologist told me that tinntius can also be from arthritis of the teeny tiny bones in the inner ear.

My conspiracy theory about Tinnitus(I've had 9 months of unemployed time to discover this folks,lol. I start my new job tomorrow((yeah!)).
So, just after WWII lets say there is a group of people, about 20 of them. They are the richest people in the world and they decide to form an alliance unbeknownst to the regular person, you and I. They form an unknown corp. We will call it G.R.E.E.D. and it is seperate from any government. G.R.E.E.D.'s only purpose is to make more money, because money is power. I sometimes too wonder why my tinnitus is loud and then I get two or three good days, etc. I had bad tinnitus for two straight weeks and honestly was losing hope that it would ever get better. I had high days before and my hope was always restored when I would get a low day. After having high days for two straight weeks I was beginning to lose hope. I prayed that God would give me a reprieve and quiet my ears because I was losing hope, and yesterday and today have been pretty good ear days. I surely needed it in order to refill my "hope cup" to get through those days I have when its not good. Dont know what causes the low days and high days, weird. I had 4 days at the beginning of this month where my ringing on a scale of 1-10 was a 1 or even possibly less. I felt sooo good. I had clarity, concentration, focus, energy, and recognized who I was. Then on that 5th day everything changed. I think there are so many things at play with tinnitus. Glad you are having low days. Wishing you more and more of them! Judy
My tinnitus was up for 2 weeks. The last couple days or so of it my hyperacusis was up. All noises bothered my ears. The sound of water, a plastic bag, running my fingers through my hair, the vibration of my own voice. It's now quieted back down. Dont know exactly what goes on to bring it about, then it calms back down, then tinnitus goes up and goes back down, it's a weird thing for sure.

I don't know what caused mine. I have Sjogrens and some of my symptoms have been increased in the last 3 or 4 months. I do not take anything for the SJ. My family Doc helps me treat the symptoms as they arise, so I can hopefully stay off of the heavy meds.
I just noticed this loud crickets.. mixed with ringing one day.Thought I would go have my hearing tested. Audio guy said I have the hearing of a 20 yr.old. Find that to be good news;I am 62 and never had this ringing. Glad to have found this forum.

Yes, I know there are monsters out there probably making us sick with both the environment, water and foods we eat. And I know they do not test the drugs we take enough before distributing them out to the public.
I have to hope there are some people out there that are working hard to help humanity, because I would like to think there was some kind of hope out there.
We al have good and horrible days with t, I thank God when I get one or two here and there. I have a feeling mine is connected some how with my sinusis. I started this with just bending down and petting my dog. However, who really knows.
All we can do is to try to take it one day at a time, and understand our triggers, and stay on top of the latest research and to keep as busy as possible.
