Hello, I would like to introduce myself. I am a 54 year old female, who has experienced different degrees of tinnitus on and off for several years.
However, a few weeks ago I had an episode of tinnitus where I woke up in the night and both ears were hissing noticeably loud.
I did not think to much of it at the time, however in the morning after I got up they were still hissing, not normal for the condition to continue on.
During the day the hissing let up, but my right ear still was having waves of on and off hissing, then it stopped and I thought all was good.
However, a week later, I noticed the hissing/ringing came back again, ranging different degrees of buzzing, hissing, almost like a radio being tuned in.
The tinnitus does appears worse in the morning then through out the day it comes on and off.
The early evening seems to the time I have the most relief from the nuisance. My right ear appears worse than the left. It appears from my ears, not from inside my head.
I have no dizziness or pain in my ears and no other noted new symptoms. In addition I have not started any new medications.
However the past 4 months I have been experiencing hot flashes during the night even though I have been in menopause for 5 years. I saw my GYN for my annual exam three weeks ago and mentioned the hot flashes, he said they can come and go for a long period of time after menopause and ordered a ultra sound, but I have not yet had it. At that time my ears were not an issue, so not mentioned. So I wonder if fluctuation in hormones can cause tinnitus?
My medical history includes anxiety, depression, two slightly bulged discs in my neck, that at times bother me, sightly high BP at times, B12 and D deficiency at times, high cholesterol, idiopathic neuropathy in my feet, and migraines. Sounds like I am a mess, but in all reality I am pretty healthy.
I have an odd unreasonable fear of taking mediation, so I presently still have high cholesterol, and slightly high BP, hoping to reduce them both with diet and exercise, and the anxiety. depression with therapy. I know it sounds ridicules, and it does not benefit my disorders having a fear of taking medications, but that fear appears to be a disorder in itself.
The migraines I have had for years, approx one every two months, but they have not changed in years. My ears do ring at times when I have a very bad migraine, but then return back to normal soon after. I was seen by a neurologist and ear specialist in the past, my ears appear ok, but said to be sensitive.
I have had MRIs, several tests too.
Ten years ago an MRI revealed some abnormal readings, however was determined not MS, not tumor, and the MRI readings have not changed on follow up MRIs, since and I have not had any new symptoms of distress except this new onset of tinnitus. The last MRI was three years ago.
I was advised to take an aspirin a day, at which I have done for years now, with no problems, I also drink approx two cups of coffee each day, so I do have caffeine each day, but have for years.
The vitamin deficiency was noted two years ago and I did receive B12 shots, but then discontinued, and have not been tested since. I suppose I should take better care of my health, (bad me!)
Through the years, I have noticed that when I diet, am sick, over tired, or very upset, the tinnitus does act up. And sometimes it just came about with possibly weather chages, but otherwise who knows????
All my life though I have had, sudden buzzes, popping, ringing, or hissing, sometimes a day or so, or just a zip out of the blue, always shorted lived though.
My daughter, now 26 had twelve ear surgeries when young, having several tubes, which seemed to be the trend then, she suffered many ear infections, and now has tinnitus, due to the damage that the surgeries caused. We saw several specialists, and then finally found an excellent one, but by that time I fear she had damage done. However she deals with the nuisance very well, but at times still has moments of distress, mostly at night.
She is happily married to youth minister, has one child, and one on the way, and many hold her in prayer for her ear ringing to improve. My daughter appears to have been blessed with carrying on with the ringing, and it does not disrupt her life to the extent to make her miserable, which makes me very happy, knowing how annoying it can be.
She was not able to fly for years, and swimming is not one of her past times of course, but was given the ok to fly over seas two years ago, going on a missions trip. Her ears were ok for the long flight since many were praying for her, which she contributes her ear dismay not an issue at the time.
Myself, I am also happily married, however the past few years I have been under a great deal of stress, due to caring for a elderly mother which has many health issues, with out siblings in the area to give me aide.
My daughter lives 50 miles from me, in a mountainous area of WNY, and I have been traveling back and forth helping her with her one year old, and setting up her new home, (good stress, but my ears act up at times driving to the higher elevation.
Last week the tinnitus returned with vengence, but I was very upset due to my beloved dogie of 17 years passed away at which caused me extreme saddens and I cried and cried.
But the ringing coming back in my ears, after I was upset about my dogie could of been coincidence.
Putting that aside, I am happily married, and do carry on each day fairly cntent, finding pockets of happiness reading, walking, gardening, and spending time with family and friends. I love taking care of my one year old first grandchild!
I am a dental assistant by trade, however presently work as a teachers aide, which is funny in a way, as I wonder what would be worse for my tinnitus, a bussing dental drill, or the toucher that I endure now of having to sit in a quit detention room over seeing students, with no distractions of any sound except in my own ears. I would like to tell the students, act up, make noise! (Chuckle)
So, I keep hoping the tinnitus goes at bay, but it has not as yet and I feel anxious, and worried it is something serious, since is more prominent, and has not let up much.
The past few days I try to keep very busy, but I find that presently doing much fast paced busy work to not think of my tinnitus, think I am sort of putting myself in denial of the issue, yes I am just plan scared, and do not pleasure the thought of doctors, tests and so on!
I also have been on the computer looking up the disorder more closely had learned that tinnitus can be a symptom of to much caffeine, aspirin, certain medications, circulatory problems, especially in large arteries in the neck are involved, vitamin B12 deficiency that can raise blood levels of homocysteine, an amino acid that is thought to be toxic to nerves, high cholesterol which actually can actually cause like stroke in the ears, tumors, ear infection, HB pressure, low blood pressure, Menieress disease, diabetes, thyroid dysfunction, viruses colds, air pressure changes, anemia, loud noises which have caused damage to nerves in ears, and aging ears. YIKES! Although it was stated that tinnitus itself is not the disease but a symptom, it usually is not a sign of serious disorder in most occasions, well I suppose the second is the good news for us.
I have to admit I am still very anxious, and still, I also dont totally understand how for instance caffeine, aspirin actually causes the tinnitus, does it affect the small nerves in the ear, which then resume normalcy when you stop the caffeine and aspirin?
It is more easy to understand how a damaged ear can cause the tinnitus, such as in my daughters case, but what causes my ears to ring when I am over tired, or sick?
I also realize that I do have many things that could contribute to my tinnitus, however I wonder why so suddenly my tinnitus became worse and am now fearing the unknown.
In my opinion tinnitus is truly is an annoying disorder but fortunately with this forum I hope to receive some support, insight on the disorder, and courage to carry on and take the measures I need to possibly find out what is causing it, then if it persists how to carry on a content life.
Any input, or suggestions, would be graciously appreciated, thank you!

If you are afraid to take medications maybe you could go to a holistic doctor who could recommend more natural approaches.
Good luck,
Sue
Also, if you want to great overview of tinnitus--what works, what doesn't, causes, treatments, get Kevin Hogan's book "Tinnitus: Turning Down the Volume." It covers everything from drugs (your bain, I know) to alternative therapies.
A sweet member on here recommended it to me and now I rec it to people--I spent weeks and weeks and WEEKS on Google researching T, and still found this book to be a great overview.
You can also use the "Search" box at the top right of this forum to research any topics about T you want.
Welcome to the group! Great bunch of people. : )
Also I plan to purchase the book.

certainly diden't turn the volume down..

When I'm tired, sick or really stressed it becomes more noticeable. I have it only in the left ear now with a constant feeling of the ear being full. Mine was caused by noise damage and I'm sorry to say my doctors early on were horrible about it.
One was insightful though and said some things that happen with the human body cannot be explained. Sometimes there are just no reason for the body to behave the way it does. Perhaps medical science has not developed enough yet to diagnose the problems.
The best advice I can give you is what apply to myself. Over the years I have learnt to ignore the noise as much as possible. You may think it is impossible but think of it like this.
If you move into a new home very close to a busy freeway, the noise from the constant traffic drives you crazy. Over time though you get use to the noise and it doesn't bother you as much. You still hear the constant traffic but it has become back ground noise that is always there but you have become very accustom too. Of course when your sick, tired or stressed the constant traffic noise gets on your nerves but when your better it doesn't effect you.
This is how I treat my noisy little friend. It is back ground noise. Some days I even forget it is there but it never goes away. Just some days other noises around me drown it out, like the hum of my computer.
I refused to let the tinnitus rule my life. Ok I have trouble hearing people properly on my left side so I make sure people sit to my right or in front of me. Yes the tv needs to be a little louder but we make jokes in my home about me. The best medicine for me has to never take myself to seriously and to train my brain to block the ringing as much as possible. Through my stubbornness, I have learnt to control the volume of my noisy friend.
I actually think I would be lost without it now because I've forgotten what complete silence is. How funny is that?
I wish you the best of luck in finding what is setting off you tinnitus episodes and dealing with how it effects you.
Presently I think I am dealing with two issues, the fear of the "cause" and the ringing ears.
I did go today and get blood tests that the doctor actually ordered a few months ago, checking on my B12, thyroid, and a few other things, that was before I had the rining.
He also gave me hydrochlorothiazide stating my BP was on the high side, but it appears only high when I am at the doctor, he still stated I should take it. I have not yet, now reading it can cause tinnitus.
However, today I woke up, and there was NO rining, I was so so happy!
Then I rested after I got home from getting my blood work done, still no ringing, until I popped up to anwser the phone and the rining came about that suddenly! Especially in my right ear.
Panic set in, along with great saddness that it was to good to be true that it would just go away as I was hoping.
Then after I was up and about the hissing let up, this seems to be the nature of it for me. Come and goes, and after resting for some reason, or in the morning???
I have a huge fear that there is something horrible going on in my brain, or disease causing this.
I also fear, "OH MY GOSH" What if the rining becomes so bad that I just can't stand it?
Sorry to sound so childish.
For me, I suppose finding out the cause if possilbe would maybe help me deal with it better.
I do suffer from anxiety, and the ringing in the ears seems to make me feel anxious, then the worry about what it is adds to it.
My sister is coming in from CA next week to visit and help me with my mom. I feel upset that this upset will be on my mind all week and I see her only once a year
It will be also, unfortunatley be a stressful as well as enjoyable visit, due to my mother is 86 and declining and a busy week it will be having a guest, and taking my elderly mother out and about all week, in addition to doctors appts for her.
However, I do think I should see the doctor at some point in time next week for my self.
Today I got my self so upset and worried over the rining in my ears, now I have a headache and feel sick.
Thanks for your support

I don't have that issue anymore. I deal with mine quite easily now. Yep its loud but only if I allow it to be. What annoys me is the fullness in my ear as I feel I need to constantly clean it out.
I do not think of tinnitus as a threat, a nuisance or something to be feared. I understand why Pattyln is so afraid because the cause has not been diagnosed. For anyone this can be a very scary time because your mind comes up with all sorts of prognosis's.
For those that hate the comparison to the noise being like living next to a freeway I think it is because you haven't learnt to control it. Of course I could be wrong but I bet you cannot totally ignore your tinnitus. Right now I'm sitting here typing and the only noise I hear is the keys as I type and the hum of my computer. I have learnt over the years to except the ringing in my ears. I can make it louder or softer.
I do not think of it as a threat nor do I allow it to control my life. It can be done but it all depends on the mind set of the person. Not everyone seems capable of doing this. It doesn't make me special just lucky.
I believe that everything in life can be controlled to some extent. I control chronic pain, tinnitus and sciatica better than others, but when it comes to migraines I'm a complete mess. Others seem to handle them better than I. It doesn't mean I stop trying to improve the way I handle them though.
Pattylyn I hope you find that the reason for your tinnitus is nothing serious and that in time you no longer fear the noise.
I have been praying a lot...by the way I have stopped working
As far as the tinnitus being a threat, well that can lead to debate I see.
In my case, if all exams and tests prove that my tinnitus is not a symptom of something serious, which could be what I ask???? Then I suppose I would have to try to face the fact that the symptom in reality is not a health threat.
However, it is to early in the game to see how well I adjust, if it stays at this level I migth be ok.
So far, I am actually starting to get used to it more, as if my brain is getting a bit more used to it.
Now, having it a few weeks "worse" now, I do find that it is worse, a hissing in both ear, right worse then left, when I first wake up. Then it appears to get better during the day, with some louder buzzing at times.
It is to early in the game for me to tell just what way my annoying ringing, buzzing, and hissing is going to go, for better or worse and still hoping it will get better!!
I feel some folks can carry on better than others I suppose with tinninus, and other health issues, depending on many factors involed.
Not making a person weaker if they have a hard time of dealing with health issues of course than others.
I get migraines here and there and although have had them for years, I get anxious, pace, and during them feel nothing on earth could be as bad!
Maybe in some, tinnitus because in the ears could affect equilbrium, which could also possibly make the disorder debilitating at times. I suppose it all depends on what the cause is, and to what degree of "noise" it causes. All my opinions of course.
As far as the question in regard to seeing a neurologist, which was not actually addressed to me, but it seems that would be suggested by a doctor if they felt there was reason to believe a further neurological work up was needed to rule out any disorders of the brain. Possibly a MRI, would be orderd.
It seems that if a ear specialist rules out any damage to the inner ear, and one has severe tinnitus, blood tests and further exam in to the matter would be suggested, since tinnutus appears to be a symptom right?
Still confused as to the reasons of what causes tinnitus to become worse in the morning, by foods, when tired, sick, and so on, and what serious disorders it could be a symptom of, causing me dismay presently.
As I said, I do take aspirin daily, and have many "things" that could contribute to my tinnitus, but what questions me is it seems my "alreday" exsisting mild here and there ear ringing, and buzzing, would of progressed slowly, not all of a sudden one day got noted worse? Oh well, further investigation at this point can only tell.
