Had an appointment with an Ear Specialist today...

Very nice Doctor here in Celebration, FL (suburb of Orlando), his name is Dr. Atkins. He is actually living with T in one ear as well. Gave me some good advice, he seems T patients pretty regularly. He has a sheet that he gives out about T, and some treatments that he has found to work. It says : It is recommended that you try the following regiment for your Tinnitus.
1. Lipoflavinoid vitamins (I explained that I am already taking those, and 0 results)
2. Zinc 50 mg one per day.
If these treatments are not effective,
3. Melatonin 3 mg at bedtime, as it is a sleep aid, but, they have found in studies that it works to quiet T.
He told me to try the Melatonin for 1 month, and if my T has not quieted down, to call him, and he will call me in a prescription for something stronger, not sure what that medicine is, but I will let you know in a month if the Melatonin does not work to quiet my T.
He did explain that there is no cure, but there are a few drugs that can quiet it down.
He also told me that his office was affiliated with Nueromonics, and he pulled the plug. He said he tried it in 2 of his patients, and he claimed that it does not work. He said if I am interested, TRT works, but it is a lengthy process, 18 - 24 months. He also said the last 5 or 6 years there has been a lot of research into T, prior to that in the 1990's, he only knew of one company doing research on T. That is about it for now, anything else I think of, I will add to this post.

My 6mo twin DD's are EBF and just started rice cereal on the first. Everything has been going fine except this morning one of them had a diaper rash (lots of redness around her anus). I read this as one of the signs of an allergy. BUT I did just buy a different brand diaper yesterday (which they have used randomly before w/no issues). Do you think its the cereal or the diaper? Im ready to start...
If you were to tell us how loud you perceive tinnitus to be from 1 to 10 what would it be? The reason I ask is their is tinnitus and their is "damn" tinnitus. I bet your friendly neighborhood ENT has the quiet type. They can't relate at all as evident by his ultra conservative and perhaps cruel approach to your condition. If it is a minor annoyance to you and doesn't disrupt your waking and sleeping hours then perhaps you will do ok on melatonin, but it only works on sleep and it will only work for a few days and then nothing. If t is disrupting your life don't wait a month to call him for something stronger. The protocol for medical intervention to quiet tinnitus and help with sleep is Xanax or Klonopin.
I have some melatonin so I'll take part in this little study as well. I bought it on my last trip to the US (you can't buy it OTC in England).
Just one question...did he recommend Zinc OR Melatonin or Zinc AND Melatonin?
Thanks for the tip - I'll post my results too.
Jason
I wonder if I can find those tablets?
He told me to try Zinc and Melatonin together, I am finding that 3mg does nothing to help me fall asleep, I even tried 6mg of Melatonin, still nothing, I am afraid to go much higher than that.
Michangel,
He said to try this Melatonin for at least 30 days continual, 3 mg a day to see if your T quiets down, I am only 3 days in, no results, but did not expect any as of yet.
