I recently talked with someone who has/had a severe tinnitus. This person is a wedding videographer. He got tinnitus from weddings - loud music every Saturday. He claims it got very bad 5 years ago. It took a while, but after 3 years of bad tinnitus, he claims it subsided and now it is hardly noticed. He always wears ear plugs in loud situations. I thought this persons story was worth sharing here and hopefully offers hope.

Not sure about everyone, but I have had tinnitus for over 25 years...it got worse after exposure to loud noises at football games...hubby used to be a coach! I now avoid loud gatherings and even had to give up going to church because we have this humongous pipe organ! I literally had pain in my ear from that! Sometimes people just become accustomed to the noise and "tune" it out...same principle that applies to people who wear the old type of hearing aids that don't filter out background noise. Of course, wearing ear plugs as he does now, probably prevents him from "stirring" up the tinnitus.

Perception is reality, if you can learn to habituate your tinnitus, then it becomes a non issue.....if its a non issue then volume appears lower even if its the same.....you have to think about it to hear it......my tinnitis is very loud and I have not learned to do this yet... I have only had it a short time, these are quotes from my doctor who was trained in trt by Pawel Jastreboff, Ph.D....I have a friend thats a lead singer in a very loud rock band and he is living fine, he plays everynight in front of thousands of people with very loud pa.....he has learned to habituate his tinnitus, even when its gets loud.....it doesnt bother him that much...

Depends what causing the tinnitus. The loudness is objective or subjective. Some noise can actually be real noise generated and in some cases it can be heared by others... from literature. If it is subjective ie you hear it only then this is likely electrical impulses generated within the hearing system or the nerve pathways from the hearing system to the brain. My guess is that the person learns to habituate the sound and learns to ignore it. Hard to assess whether it has gotten louder or you just learned to habituate. I think in my case, if it did get louder, I would just learn to habituate to the new level. The problems comes when you cannot learn to ignore it. Some tinnitus can be caused by other deseases other than hearing damage from loud noises thus it is important to make sure nothing else is wrong...ie high blood pressure etc...
