This is why certain medications can help. Anticonvulsants, antidepressants, beta blockers, alpha blockers, agonist , all work control over excited neurons. If we can prevent the random firing of neurons we can help prevent the noise from tinnitus. Unfortunately the problem is spread across the whole brain so no single type of medicine will fix all types of neurons.

My neurons must be having a "rave" this week cause they are shouting at each other - gggrrrrr.

The one interesting thing that happend with my tinnitus and sound sensitivity is when I had to go into the hospital and have an outpatient procedure. The anesthesiolgist used propophol, Versed, and Phentanyl in my IV. I wound up being admitted overnight for irretractable nausea due to the propophol administered but when I went home that next day my tinnitus and sound sensitivity was zero. The theory my primary doctor gives is that obviously those medications dampened the nerves that are causing the ringing and made it stop. But that's a whole lot of anesthesia to use to get results! One day I hope they find a cure for this. With so many baby boomers coming of age and developing tinnitus as well as many Iraq, Afghanistan war veterans developing it as well, they will have to do more research due to the overwhelming amount of people affected by it. Until that day...I forge on.

Interesting, when I had a full knee replacement, I too did not have t for days after the surgery, now I understand why.

My neurons have been screaming at each other too. This week has been bad. In the right ear, which was my good ear. The hum and shrill scream is becoming unbearable. They have the right side of my face beginning to feel numb. It seems as if its connected to my sinuses because the right side feels full and my eye is watery. I wish those neurons would whisper. Better still, I wish they would play the quiet game. I try to stay positive but this is ridiculous.

McMaster U used to have a website where you could match the sound of your T. I saved the sound on my computer and played it for my family. Of course, since mine is very high and shrill, they were all like "Arrrgh! Stop!" Later, when I was trying to say something and the fam was all talking over me, I played the sound and everyone froze instantly. Then I got to say what I was trying to say. : )

I wish I could do that, Julie as many of my family has no clue! It can be very frustrating.
