hi there.. ive never felt that feeling due to my thyroid problems, but cause of the level of meds i take i get anxiety ,and if im having a particulaly anxious time i cant swallow as i feel ive got a lump in my throat!! maybe its a possibility?? sorry i cant be of more help! x

I am almost 4 weeks past TT and I do have some trouble. I also had trouble before due to the large lymph nodes that were removed. My doc warned me that as I heal my throat would start to feel a tightening sensation and not to panic. She said it was due to inside scarring as well as outside. Could it be possible that it takes a full year to heal completely and little by little the scarring will loosen up? Please tell me if you had a numb spot above your adams apple and if so did it go away? Thanks

hi there.. i still have a numb neck now and its nearly 4 years ago... i especially feel it in the cold or when im on my monthlys! my neck tightens up and feels sore! its usually over to the right as thats where they took the lymph nodes from but it does happen at the front too!! i agree with the doctor.. give yourself time to heel!.. its not been long xx

Hello, I am new to the group, and do not know for sure if I have cancer or not. I am having a partial and possibly total thyroidectomy on 4/7. Total if the biopsy in surgery is positive. Anyway, I have read that if there is nerve damage during surgery, you can have trouble breathing, as well as trouble swallowing. I am having trouble swallowing now-things-especially pills -get stuck,my voice is hoarse, and my throat is sore each night on the side that the nodule is on. I am starting to get scared about the surgery-that something like nerve damage will occur. my track record for medical screw-ups is pretty extensive in the last 6 months. I have been through a PE, found out I have 2 genetic clotting diorders, this thyroid thing, and just found out they found something on my mammogram. When it rains, it pours. Wish me luck with my surgery please.

I had similar symptoms (trouble swallowing) for about 4 months. It gradually went away. It could be that some damage was done to your recurrent nerve. You might want to consider trying swallow therapy (ask your doctor). Nerve damage can take a long time to heal. Your problem could go away on its own within the next year or so.

How long right after surgery did people have trouble swallowing from swelling. I am 3 days out from surgery. Any advice?

I had a thyroidectomy about two years ago and still have trouble swallowing sometimes and also get strangled very easily. The Dr. told me it was the result of not producing enough saliva and damage to nerves. My mouth really gets dry. There are some things on the market you can use for the dry mouth. I really get aggravated when I get strangled so easily though. Maybe you will not have as much trouble swallowing eventually.

HI. I just had my surgery in Feb. (2008). I have trouble swallowing and feel a tightness in my throat area, as well as the fact that I have trouble with my voice. My Endo MD says it's scar tissue and that I need speech therapy. My physcial therapist says that they need to do special message in the throat area to release the scare tissue, as well as special speech therapy for my voice.
I think that will help the tightness, the voice problems and the swallowing problems. Maybe you can try suggesting that to your doc.?

I had total thyroidectomy in 2000 and have had occasional problems with swallowing since. I was admitted to hospital in 2001 when food was stuck in my oesophagus and unable to swallow even water. This required medical intervention to remove. I had barium swallow test and no problems were identified.

Last week (2008) I was admitted again with same symptoms, fortunately the blockage cleared after 12 hours once I had been put on muscle relaxant drip. It has happened about 6 times this year so seems to be getting worse. Previous times have cleared themselves after few minutes up to 30 mins. It has only happened when eating meat so for the moment I am becoming vegetarian.

I have heard that sometimes your central nerves system has a wire that is not transmitting to your nerve to respond and losen your esophgous so that you can swallow. It maybe that your surgeon nicked your nerve. It also maybe your brains ability to communicate the message. This is purly speculative but is another possibility.

I found out that I have a hiatal hernia. I don't remember having much trouble swallowing before my thyroid surgery, but I have been put on different medications since the surgery, one of which is Lorazepam for anxiety. Now I wonder if the Lorazepam has relaxed the muscles controlling the valve to my stomach and caused my hernia.

Do you experience reflux or regurgetation? For me anxiety causes me problems but I feel like and think that scarring from my surgery my trap pill and not allow them to get to my stomach.

I read that they recommend Protonix to help you swallow rather then surgery might want to look into that. Sorry, about that.

Themctier, I don't think lorazepam -or valium can cause a hiatal hernia. Protonix is more for acid reflux to cut the acid so your esophagus isn't damaged. I still think you should look into possible nreve damage. I have to tell you that I still get things-especially pills -stuck -and my surgery was in 4/08 -by the way, I ended up not having cancer, but Hashimoto's thyroiditis. I also have gotten a lot of ear pain on the side of my thyroidectomy -only had 1/2 removed. So who knows what nreves may have been damaged while they were in ther doing there thing.

Good morning, i'm new here and so thankful that there are people to converse with about this thyroid junk...I had surgery Jan. 3. Are any of you suffering from insomnia and night chills and sweats?

I had thyrod surgery in 1982 and still cant do a good swallow and it can be very annoying.
