HELLO! I hope that this will help you feel better :) I had a total thyridectomy at the end of April. When you wake up from surgery you will obviously have a sore neck, unfortunatly your med will not be balanced for quite sometime, but having said that you can expect your blood work to be closely monitored to adjust your thyroid levels if they are low which will be the case for a while. You will be very tired for a few months, until your medicine is regulated. Depending on the severity of the malignancy your shoulder may be sore or achy, but expect that at least short term due to the anestesia. Your recovery for this surgery is pretty quick I not only had my thyroid out but also 91 lymph nodes, in which they had to do a radical neck dissection on me. I was only off of work for 4 weeks and I am in nursing. A usual time off work is about 2 weeks if you have a job that does not involve lifting heavy people pr objects. I am not sure what the toxic catatoma is. That may be something related the the breat ca. The only risks and comlications of the surgery is the usual infection at the site, and all that good stuff. There is a small risk of what is called a thyroid storm, but that is rare and your surgeon will do extensive testing to help that not happen.
