Not knowing what to expect

I think waiting to hear what the Surgical Oncologist says is really difficult. I have always been "in control" and now feel like I can't be. I need questions like what is like post opertively and what will the next few months be like answered. My daughter is getting married in November is it realistic to thing I will feel good by then?

Have you been scheduled for a thyroidectomy?

The surgery itself seems to heal quickly, I was only uncomfortable for about 2 weeks.

Met Surgical Oncologist today. Very impressed with him. Should have surgery date within the next couple days. Felling up-beat.

I had a total thyroidectomy on 5/23/11. It took about 2 months for me to start feeling better. I still don't completely have sensation back between my scar and my chin. It's slightly tingly. I had problems with feeling tightness & "choking" while my neck healed. Some of it for me was worse than before surgery, and my mass/cancer was pressing on my esophagus & windpipe. The pain wasn't too bad, it was mostly pressure and tightness. Good luck & best wishes & let me know if you have any other questions!!

I am 34 yo post total thyroidectomy for Hashimotos, bilateral multinodular masses & papillary carcinoma

Hey Pedsnurse! I don't know if you've had your surgery yet or not, but I had mine one week and one day ago, and I feel totally fine. I get tired a little sooner in the day if I do anything like house cleaning or going for a walk, and like Beth Anne said, my neck is a little tight/tingly -- no feeling from scar to chin up the middle of my neck. I'm talking, even though the doc said to keep it minimal. So if you can get by with minimal talking, you should feel fine! Lots of prayer and trust in God helps IMMENSELY -- more peace than you can imagine.
