I am no expert, but have a nodule that is being removed at the end of the month, so I have been doing some research.

The majority of nodules are not cancerous. I would ask for a nuclear scan. See if they are "hot" or "cold." The cold ones are more likely cancerous. Singular, solid nodules are more likely cancerous than other types.

The good news is, even if cancer, most thyroid cancers are highly treatable. So keep that in mind. I hope some others see this and respond with their experiences. Hopefully, it will ease your mind.

Steve, I'm in the exact same place as you are. They just found several nodules on my left and a 2cm one on the right. I have my biopsy soon. I just can't seem to stop worrying about it. Hang in there and we will keep each other updated. (((hugs)))

OK, Keep me updated, I'm not sure when mine is yet. I'm going to request that they just take my thyroid out, I have had a goiter before and now I can feel these things in my throat when I swallow. I just want them out and over with. Best of luck to you! (((hugs)))

Are any of you suffering badly from your throat problems?
I'm in a bad way & almost lost my life 3 times in 2 weeks
through my throat problem.
My story is I have had throat problems for about 8 months,
only once did it get real bad but settled down.Well it feels
like my right side of my throat doesn't work at all & feels
very limited on the left side -working to swallow food &
liquids.I got alittle bit of chicken meat (not bone) stuck in
the left side of throat,was admitted into hospital for few
days.Now 41 days later here I am all kinds of tests done,
hospital aren't bothered to hurry up & breathing symptom
is my biggest problem. CT scan shows I have a few
hypodense nodules biggest being approximately 8mm.
Can you eat & drink without any problems?? Cos I CAN'T,
I've had involuntary swallow happen with meat & had to
pull it out of my throat to actually live.The other times I've
eaten the food but the breathing problem straight after has
just made it near impossible to get my breath back.It's been
darn scary.I've spent a lot of time during 42 days eating just
thin texture yogurt as it's the ONLY safe thing to eat.I've just
got that hungry that I'm eating at times but 4 single meals a
week.Hospital dr knows it got bad with meat stuck but still
never hurried for me to get Ultra Sound done.I'm waiting
5 weeks before getting that done & 6 weeks till I see hospital
dr again.She (dr) never discussed nodules with me,I read
report & expected her to discuss information with me.I have
breathing problems constantly.I've had the camera up the
nose & down the throat (forget the name of test) about 4-5
times (does it everytime I see her),I've had Endoscopy &
just had CT scan done last week.
I've spend most of the time undiagnosed & in limbo not being
able to research what's wrong with me but I have done so
on my symptoms,that it was a throat problem.Now I've just
found out about these lumps I have more to go on.My half
sister was thought to have throat cancer & it spread they
took out half her Thyroid plus she was cancer free.
On my mum's side family all die with various cancers or
survived one cancer earlier in life to die of others later on.
So I'm worried that these maybe little cancers growing.
This is the first time in all these days (42) I've found others
at the stage I'm at,just finding out what's wrong.

Hello everyone, I also have nodules on my thyroid. These were found during a carotid ultrasound. The thyroid ultrasound, which I had after the finding on the carotid ultrasound, found same nodules and a fine needle aspiration is recommended. I go to an ENT doc on May 1.

Like all of you I am scared! First, I am scared of having the fine needle aspiration done. Don;t like the idea of a needle in my throat! Can anyone tell me if this aspiration is the same as a biopsy? Can I get knocked out for this procedure?

Hi Redz. I also had a fine needle biopsy. No, they cannot knock you out for that. I am very afraid of needles so my doctor prescribed adovan which is an anxiety pill. I took that plus a pain pill (tramadol). My husband is a nurse and he said that those would calm me down. He sure was right. I felt "very good" going into the room for the biopsy. I didn't feel a thing. My neck hurt a little afterwards but not too bad that I couldn't take the pain. You will do fine. Just remember to stay very still so the doctor can get the needle in just right. I don't want to scare you but they put the needle in 7 times in my neck--not saying that is how many times your doctor would do it.

I had a needle in my throat. no meds. I didn't enjoy it, and it felt like something was itching my throat during it...I just held still and breathed slowly and later drove myself home.
So funny that all this stuff with our necks is to make us healthy...feels crazy to cut our throats (surgery) is a good thing.
It all was not too bad for me...including the surgery. all worth it to get it over with and get the cancer out!
I had 2 c sections, and they were lousy to get over- those first days...not so with a thyroidectomy. Stay calm.

I just don't know why they are even giving me the FNA, why put me through the expense and terrors lol..I have so many nodules and I can feel them when I swallow, not to mention the old goiter I had and the RAI. I have heard that if it comes back inconclusive that they take them out anyway and test them while you are on the table, if they are cancer then they take the thyroid. I'm going to tell them to just do that with me, I hope they listen. I'm such a baby. :(

Thanks for your replies to my post. I am having the fine needle aspiration on Friday here in Philly. Interventional Radiology doc said they would do it with sedation. I am so relieved. I have an essential tremor and was so scared that my head would be bobbing around while they were trying to jab needles in my throat. I am still scared but coming here has helped my feel not so alone. I am a widow and sure wish I had my hubby by my side through this. I have never been operated on and really never had any medical problems. I have seen enough through my husband illnesses to be scared of hospitals, doctors and just anything to do with sickness. I don't know how people have the courage to go through illness. I wish I was brave, but am thankful for support from this community. Good luck to all of you on your journey and I'll let you know how I progress.

Feel good about your doctor, and you will be fine...the night of my surgery I was up serving water to people on my floor, they had several emergencies, and people calling for water, and I couldn't sleep anyway....passed the time.
My doctor was great. When they wheele me in I said "let's get this party started!" and double checked which side they were looking at taking, and then relaxed. woke up with NO thyroid, cancer, and a very nice recovery from the surgery.
Is there anyone that could stop by and check on you the first day or two after you get home? If not, speak to someone at the hospital about it...maybe visiting nurse....

hello i am having the same problem i started out with one now i have one on the left and 2 on the right one in front they are not sure if it is cancer or not they are sending me to a surgeon and to get it all out when they did the biopsy it came back not sure

I too had the small needle aspiration. It was a total surprise, as I was only told to go to this endo doc. When I arrived, he said I would be having an ultra sound biopsy! A what, I asked? He said if he had told me BEFORE I arrived I might not have, and he was right. I have two nodules on either side of my thyroid and he took two samples from each, standard to get a good reading. I felt the needle insertion less than I did the blood draw from my arm! I had nothing for pain except the doc's word that it would not be uncomfortable. Afterwards, I felt no pain whatsoever. The worst part was waiting for the biopsy results, which took nine days. It was negative. Yeah! I have to be checked every nine months and must call if other symptoms come up, especially swallowing issues. I was really surprised that I have goiters and nodules. I have two daughter, one hypo and the other hyper. Little did I know that I was the source, as no one in my family has had thyroid problems before. Isn't it strange? Good luck to all of you getting ready to have this procedure. It really was ok with me. I hope for the same for you.
