Tuesday morning I applied, in person, for fuel and food assistance. I swear...childbirth was easier to endure. I never would have believed I'd find myself in the position of needing such things, but it was time to face it.
I do my best to keep working and will still have to continue, but it isn't enough to get by. My parents are wonderful to keep helping me, but they're very old and need their money for their own living expenses. I've qualified for assistance for a long time, but swore the only thing I would use is the state healthcare insurance.
So...I dragged my hurting self into the office that's located in the lowest level of a big building about 10 miles from where I live, forced myself to the window and said I needed help. After waiting about 20 minutes for my turn, the sweetest woman called me into her office and helped me with the whole process.
Yesterday...just 3 days later...I received my food card and fuel assistance confirmation in the mail.Even though it's late to be applying for fuel, they still put $822 in my account where I get my oil. My food allowance for the last few days of this month is $60 and Feb.1st, I'll start receiving $200 a month.
I've had enough anxiety over having to ask for help and was trying to come to terms with it, but on the same day I got the help, I was knocked down to size by the receptionist in a Podiatrist's office.
I have some foot issues that have needed attention for some time and my doc has encouraged me to see a Podiatrist. I called to make an appt. with the doc my parents and sister all see. The woman I spoke with was pleasant until she asked what I had for insurance. Her attitude completely changed and she informed me that he isn't taking any more Medicaid patients! She couldn't end the conversation fast enough!
I can't describe how it all made me feel. What a day of reality smacking me down to size.
Peep...peep...somebody tell me it's going to get easier.

89FToday it is again another hot day but cooler then yesterday. Since this is August it is to be expected in my neck of the woods. All the grass is yellow and flowers are starting to go to seed. I need to water my garden but this time of the year I'm so over it, which is weird because all my plants have their fruit or veggies.Sandra, this time of year reminds me of your Dad and his toms. We'd...

I'm glad you got heat assistance and food assistance. I get fuel assistance, too. It's very minimal, but it is definitely better than nothing.
I wonder if you would be accepted by SSD. You can still work your limited amount of hours and still recieve it. It's worthh looking into.
Please let us know how the foot doctor search goes.
Heather
now the dr's office. yuck. the medicare and medicaid rates of pay to dr's are pitiful. i wanted to see my mother's dr here, but she wouldn't accept medicare, so i ended up at a "practice" where i often have to see residents often.
i hope you find a good podiatrist.
i second heather about trying for SSD. i think it's SSD.gov.
keep your head high. hugs!!
I understand it was hard but I'm proud of you! I mean that. Hopefully this will relieve some financial stress for you.
Hugs
I'm glad you got help, you should and appalled at that woman's response! As my counsellor would say, you cant control other pple, only your own reaction to them. Dont let her reaction affect your mood so much, she's not worth it.
There is another Podiatrist in that town so I guess if my own doc can't help, I'll see if he'll take me. My feet really need some attention. I kind of need them for work!
I hate that I feel like a poor person...I guess I am. Thanks for all making me feel better, though.
even when approved for SSD, medicare doesn't kick for 3 years, so i was also on medicaid also. after years of working to help people with the system, i still wasn't ready to deal with it for myself. i went through my savings trying to stay afloat...
on SSD i no longer qualify for food stamps. ha ha, i'm above poverty level.
we've both done what we can to contribute, so i try not to let it bring me down which is no easy task.
i hope you won't downgrade yourself with that label. you just need a helping hand.
Gentle hugs, my friend,
Cindy
I kept telling myself that I had a roof over my head and I didn't live in Afghanistan. I sent prayers out, kept walking, adapted to the new low, which in hindsight, wasn't so bad because every time something good came along, it was like winning a lottery. The mind is creative, life changes, this is just a chapter in your life.
Hugs, sweetie. You have support.
