I just recently married. My new husband has a 14 year daughter who has regular visits with us. His daughter is suffering from social anxiety and panic attacks.
Over the past month when we go to pick her up from her mothers, she is refusing to come with us. She says she is scared to leave her house. She sees a theropist and is taking medication.
I was wondering what is the best practice, we have just been supportive and telling her its OK, but my husband is really depressed because he has not had any visits with her for a month now.
Any advice the best way to handle this situation?
im really not sure. I'd say just try to do your best to support her. Dont push her either. Show her you are willing to be there for her if she needs you. I can imagine that she is also I bit worried about you staying with her father (if he had been in a relationship that didn't work out before) I dont really know but that's what I would do.
Nobody ever really wants to do this but at the time, counseling wasn't enough and so I had to stay at a behavioral health center. I was with others my own age and we were able to just talk with each other about our problems and be able to relate and give advice to each other as well. Also there are many nurses and doctors there that can help out if someone has an anxiety attack.
I was able to learn many new coping skills and I'm doing a lot better. Another thing I would suggest is video calling her. It's not the same as talking to her in person but it might help a little bit.
