As Americans we like to think we are above most civilizations and countries as far as morality and humanity. But we really are not.
Throughout history the United States has done some horrific things to other groups of people. We killed the Indians and ran them off their land and we enslaved black folks for centuries. BTW, slavery is still with us, but it has just evolved somewhat. There are still people so ignorant and mean-spirited in this country that they would like to deport or kill every black person, every gay person, and every person who does not fit their "definition" of what they think an American should be.
It is disgusting and VERY ignorant.
We did not even allow women---who were American citizens and the mother of our children----the right to vote until 1920. How damn wrong is that???
We see all kinds of bigotry and injustices in our society today. No, we are not much different than most other countries; we just practice our bigotry in a more "sanitized" manner which makes it less noticeable.
In my work, I often deal with some of these kinds of people. They will say something like, "Obama needs to be taken out and hanged," or "we should shoot all gay people between the eyes and just be done with them," or "I just hate these black people so much I would like to kill them all." I listen to such nonsense and I think to myself, "What in the hell is the matter with you??" Actually, I have said that to another person a few times.
Just disgusting that any country would resort to such things as hanging people because of the color of their skin. How were we ever so ignorant?? And the question that lingers in my mind is this----"Could it happen again??"
Sometimes we need to be reminded of the past so we will not make the same mistake in the future.

The pictures don't look that different from the images from the Middle East now...do they?
And yet...in less than a hundred years...we've evolved. Still far, far from perfect, but enough to make the past almost unrecognizable. If it was possible here, it's possible there (and vice versa). So yes, we could go back.
This election cycle, as I listen to Trump, I think that I understand the appeal that Hitler had. Deport them all. Take our country back. Feeding the hatred is an easy way to power. The greatest fear is that they'll become the minority and the hatred will be turned on them.
We could blame the leader, but the fault is in ourselves who choose him. He'd never stand a chance in a more tolerant society.
Well one, there's not quite as much as is portrayed on the news.
Second, we've got a long history of people coming to this country at different times and under different situations.
Third, I think religion fuels a lot of the hatred and intolerance.
Forth, I think that our military adds to it. Not intentionally...well sort of intentionally. In order to kill, armies dehumanize the enemy. Countless examples (Raghead, Nazi's, Krauts, Duck, Gook, Cockroach, countless more, and countless much worse.) Calling them a bad name makes it easier to kill them. And the US has had a very large army for a very long time.
Of course, once the shooting stops, they're supposed to see them as humans again...yeah right.
Fifth, we live pretty spread out. That's not all bad. But it's harder to beat the hell out of your wife and abuse your kids if you're living within breathing sounds of other people. And then, even if you do do it, other people know...it's not a "secret". It may not be talked about, but the dimension of living a secret life and keeping up appearances is brutal.
Add to that that, for a long time it was tolerated...and we've got generations of people that have lived through it. If not them, then their parents, grandparents, etc. As the cycle slowly breaks...numbers are coming down.
Rates of violence are crashing in the country. It's not talked about...but it's true. I credit it partially to the fact that kids aren't having the hell beaten out of them, going to school, everyone in school knowing, and nothing being done.
(The flip side to THAT is that we're trigger happy about putting people in jail right now, and throwing away the key...)
Anyway, I'm no expert, but those are my thoughts on it.

I'm more in line with the founders of the US who were interested in "freedom From religion". I credit my high school AP US History class with making me go back and read what the founders actually wrote in letters and such.
As I've written before I'm atheist. Religion takes on a totally different appearance after a number of years. I can't count the passive-aggressive religious comments I've heard. Things along the lines of "They're absolutely awful, terrible people...but we should forgive them."
....Umm, do people even hear themselves? I get that you're talking about Ted Bundy or some other person that did something that seems "unhuman".
I don't see it that way. I think that it's seeing the humanity of the people that did the most "inhumane" things...that we understand what it is to be human. I think that it's in NOT calling them "awful" and NOT thinking that it's our place to forgive Anything...that we find humanity.
My heart breaks for Ted's victims. And my heart breaks for Ted. I'd rather have been his victim, than have been him.
Think I'm alone? I'm not. Norway has a criminal justice system that actually reforms people...even people like Ted Bundy. Their "prisons" are nice places....local populations actually vacation on the property. And they've become one of the most peaceful societies on Earth.
