What in the hell is wrong with people and why do we continue with the death penalty in this country? There should be mountains of reasonable doubt in this case, yet we want to execute him.

If they cannot seem to find the fairness to give him another trial, at least take him off death row and give him life without parole. Would that not serve the same purpose as far as public safety is concerned? This would give his attorneys time to prepare for another trial or even to give time for Justin Sneed to recant his testimony.

Have people become so wicked in this country that they don't even care if they execute an innocent men?

Have we completely lost our humanity in America? Are we so intent on punishment that we no longer care about the facts?

Nobody gains by executing an innocent man.

I know I say the same thing over and over... How can you say that murder is heinous and deal with it by committing murder... It's talking out of both sides of your mouth... It's either horrific or it isn't

We both watched the recent CNN program on botched executions... This isn't the first program I've watched on this and anyone who thinks this is humane would have to have sadistic tendencies in my mind

I read a book once and I can't think of the title but the woman who wrote it had interviewed several infamous psychopaths... I know one was Ted Bundy...so like that..... The last person she interviewed who had killed far more then anyone else was a hangman.... An executioner and she, being a psychologist diagnosed him as being a psychopath and had found a perfect job for himself

I think that the why is pretty easy. It's not PC, but it's easy to understand.

I think it comes from a culture that sells fear. And from the people, as a collective whole, that are willing to buy into that fear. That we need guns to protect us. That there are countless people out there wanting to hurt us.

When I was in nursing school, I was told that it wasn't okay for me to talk the streets of Harrisburg Pa by myself....huh??

Now I get that I wasn't the average pretty young student in their 20's with parents that would be upset.

I've walked down much tougher streets than that. Heck I had a friend who once lived in "downtown' Harrisburg and fought off an attacker who tried to take her bag. This was back when it cost big money to get resume's printed up and she'd just used her last $50 for some that were in her bag...no cash.

In any case, as I walked along, I'd talked to several "questionable" people in the space of a few blocks. Offended (sort of) the one guy for mislabeling his NFL shirt, apologized profusely and offered him one of the books that I was bringing to donate that my kids had outgrown. I thanked him for taking it, explaining that I'd gotten it for 10 for a dollar at a yard sale, but felt guilty throwing it away into the garbage.

See that's the thing, treat people like they're People, and they respond to that. They may still get high on drugs (deal with enough of that Within the family), and they may be total jerks (again have dealt with that enough Within my family), and it may be best to leave them the heck alone (Yes, I'm talking about Uncle Scott...)

And ya know what, I don't care what he did with the book. At the school bus stop, one kid peed on my daughter's new Princessalicious (sp?) book. I don't think that he could top that.

If people saw the people on trial as People...things might begin to change...

I think it's a mob mentality ... I wonder what the people that want to apply the death penalty so badly feel when a wrongful conviction is brought to light.

Wrongful convictions who have received the death penalty... People want to believe the professionals that have the system down pat and know how to use it to their benefit in order to be right... I have no doubt that there are people who truly care about what is right however a lot of people get caught up in the 'game' of proving that they are right and will "win"

If someone is fighting for their lives and kill or maim in self defense that's totally understandable and I would do the same

Once someone is stopped and apprehended, tried and convicted (even if they are guilty) and spends 10 years or how ever long it is under a controlled environment and living by the rules as they almost always do... Lifers don't act out much when incarcerated... They're a calming element to the system.... There is absolutely NO reason to then kill them...I believe it's barbaric and there is no excuse that makes sense to me other then cruelty and vengeance... and that's what I believe it is

I also don't believe it's reasonable at all to make it as hard as it is to prove that a wrongful conviction has taken place... It's terrible Patti how hard the systems in North America make it to have the courts be willing to look at anything new... They never want to be wrong and if someone is killed by the decision of the court they don't give a damn even if they're wrong... They'd rather kill then be wrong

Not just the courts though....the jury too.

Easier to put someone in jail or kill them, than to have doubts and have them go out and commit another crime...

I agree that there are definitely people who should never be allowed to be free in society... Society needs to be protected by some with severe personality disorders... I don't dispute that at all.... I do think that prisons should be more humane

Forensic mental health facility's although not always great by any means house some really dangerous people much more humanely then prisons ... I wish that they were more on the same page in the ways that they treat people...x

I think you're misunderstanding me. Sure there are people who are guilty.

But I'm talking about situations that haven't been proven...or anything close to it. People feeling guilty about letting someone go. Then if the 1 in a 1000 case happens and someone else is hurt.


People just don't feel that sort of guilt in the destruction of an innocent person sent to jail or death row...

I hear you Patti... A lot of times people don't want to believe it if there isn't a smoking gun... Are they 'really' not guilty

People still believe the people that work for the system for the most part

The camera's on phones are doing a wonderful job of pointing out for instance the poor souls who are being shot by police often for their skin tone or just because the police have that type of power

We have to stop the 'sheep mentality' .. Trust needs to earned not just readily given ... It's hard because we've been taught by very young ages (most of us anyway) that there are people who we can trust almost automatically and it just isn't so....x

Fear does play a role in our thinking. The media has managed to instill fear-----sometimes irrational fears-----into the minds of the citizens of this country.

Before 9/11 and The Patriot Act, fear was just a lingering infection. After those two events it became a full fledged epidemic weakening our nation.

But fear has been there for years. Think of the McMartin Pre School case, for example. I had a friend who decided to exercise his Constitutional rights and go to trial on a child sex charge as he said he was innocent. The jury found him guilty without any evidence except the young child's testimony.

After the verdict, his mother quizzed a couple of the jurors. They said, "Well, there wasn't much evidence either way, but we were afraid to let a potential child molester go free."

That kind of thinking is so disgusting to me that I don't know what else to say.
