Sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) is any sudden and unexplained death of an apparently healthy infant aged one month to one year. SIDS is responsible for roughly 50 deaths per 100,000 births in the US.

So today at work, one of the seniors at the senior center gave my supervisor an article that she cut out in the Aug. 17, 2009 edition of Woman's World Magazine and told my supervisor "it made her think of me". The title of the article is "Onesies that save babies' lives." The article is about a women who lost her son to SIDS and blames it on the fact that she never discussed "back to sleep" with her babysitter. Apparently, her baby died with the babysitter who had put him to sleep on his belly.

The woman in the article has developed these
"life-saving onsies" that say "This side up" to help remind people to put their babies to sleep on their backs.

Now, I can not even express to you how ANGRY I was when I read this. How very misleading. Austin was on his back and he still died - I guess because he didn't have the "life-saving onsie" on! (And by the way, the article really calls them life-saving onsies)

What makes me even angrier is now, the senior who gave this article to my supervisor probably thinks that Austin died because he was sleeping on his stomach - which he wasn't. Regardless of the sleeping postion, babies still die of SIDS. This article is so misleading. AHHHHHH!!!!!

I'm not trying to start a debate on anything but I just had to get this off my chest. The article mention's the SIDS's mother's foundation. I haven't looked at it yet, but the website is HayesFoundation.org.

And if this mother, Kyra Oliver, is a member of Daily Strength and is reading this... thank you for doing a huge disservice to all moms who have lost a baby to SIDS. AHHHHHH!!!!!

I completley agree! That only goes to show you how uneducated everyone still is when it comes to sids. I've heard of babies dying while breatfeeding....that has absolutely nothing to do with sleep position! Maybe we should be in contact with Kyra to have her write a retraction or apology about how it's a risk factor, not THE FACTOR!

Just yet another article that misinforms people on the facts about SIDS. I myself can admit before losing Joey I didn't completely understand what SIDS was either. As parents I think we need to be more educated... properly educated. I know nobody wants to hear about dead babies... but its a reality. A reality we have to live with now. At least they can do is make sure the things they are saying publically are accurate.

I agree with everything you all have said! The misinformation that is out there is mind boggling. Sleeping position is considered a risk factor, but it does not cause SIDS!

Mason was sleeping on his back and he died...

"Life Saving"...come on. Chances are...the fact that your babysitter put him to sleep on his belly has NOTHING to do with it. Magazines do just that though...they paint it as something that has risk factors...but really it isn't that big of a deal. YES IT IS...it happens more than any one of us would like to think. Brandy...I think that the letter should be written and published.

This is so lame... people keeping asking me Kendal's position too! I always would put Kendal on her back, but she always woke up completely turned around on her side- These people don't think about what happens when your baby is mobile! I feel like a broken record trying to educate people... but, when articles like this are written it makes me want to scream! Someone thought they were trying to help, like oh if she would have only known! However, they just look stupid!

WOW What a great shirt for MORONS!!!!!!! UGH yeah this one has me FIRED up!!!!!!! WTH!!!!! Here we go...........let's do a poll, I'll start another thread for all of us who lost children who were sleeping ON THEIR BACKS!!!! Brandy, yeah that senior was well meaning (although the article was DUMB AS HELL). If it makes you feel better....we can do this post.....print it off and pass it along (use the same supervisor who gave you the article). This can be your subtle way of setting the record straight. OOOOOOOOOHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH we need to get some letters going on this one!!!!!!!!!!! I am spitting flames!!!!

the more I think about it really, that woman has my pity. She is a SIDS mom but doesn't realize that babies die on their backs too.....may God bless the IGNORANT they know not what they do.....the only thing she has accomplished is to make SIDS sound like something that could be prevented, she really needs to read up about SIDS.

Siena absolutely refused to be on her belly, so there was no way in hell that that was a contributing factor!!! OK....mad, here too....
