A clot is not something that could not have been prevented. I pray that you get the answers you are seeking.

I would ask the chances of it happening again if you got pregnant again. I would also ask if blood thinners would be okay to take during pregnancy. Its hard enough for all of us to go through this once. My wife and I can't imagine what it would be like to go through this again. So, while those are tough questions to ask, I would certainly want to know the chances of it happening again.

Also, what type of blood disorder? Does it effect you? Is it something you are a carrier for? I would get as much information as you can and find out how you need to treat it or what you need to be aware of. I'm glad you got answers. It might not feel better yet but at least you wont continue wondering.

well i'm going to a specialist soon who can give me more info i guess. Its called pregnancy thrombophilia i believe.

I had a couple of clots in my placenta and they tested me for antiphospholipids in the blood. Sometimes if you are exposed to someone else blood, your body can produce antigens which work against foreign blood, and can cause clotting in pregnancy. They said I could have been exposed to my mum's blood when I was born and the antigens lie dormant until pregnancy. Thankfully I was negative for that condition. Also they should look at your platelet count which is the component of the blood that clots, and if you have any irregularities in the normal clotting process.
Other than that I'm on daily travel aspirin, and if they had found anything more serious they would have taught me how to inject myself with anticlotting drugs daily during the rainbow pregnancy.
Unfortunately in this life somethings are only discovered when the strain of pregnancy occurs, so there would have been nothing you could have done to know or prevent this problem until the problem happened...
Hope they can offer you the necessary tests, and that it all comes back fine..

I have Factor V Leiden Mutation. It is what killed my son. I had a clot in the placenta that kept oxygen from getting to Josiah.
The questions that are good to know is how bad yours is.
Do you always need to take blood thinners, or is it just during your pregnancy.
Can you be on any type of birth control, or do you need to stay away from the ones with estrogen.
Do you need to take blood thinners during pregnancy, and are they self injections.
Is it hereditary, does my kid have a chance to get it? Should I have my family members tested?

I would ask what YOU need to do about the gene mutation. I have one and one doctor didn't offer anything, another one I then specifically asked because I thought they should have some kind of idea and he said "uh, i don't know" and then this new one we switched to immediately gave me two things I need to do while pregnant, TTC, and for the rest of my life. Don't forget your health is important too!

Then I would also ask, if you are interested, what about future pregnancies? Good luck. It doesn't make it hurt any less to know why it happened, but it may help you in the future to have that knowledge ahead of time.
