Very interesting topic. It would be a great ordeal to go through being accused of causing your miscarriage. Way worse if you didn't cause it. But, in a way, I agree with it to a certain extent. For example, if someone has a high risk pregnancy, and the doctor puts her on bed rest. If she decides that she'd rather not follow the doc's instructions and go out partying or some other unimportant event, I think that's reckless behavior. I used that as an example because I have a relative who has done that. In my opinion, I think a pregnant mom should be thoroughly informed of what not to do or eat, and those guidelines should be followed. We can't control everything that goes on inside our bodies that have to do with our baby, so we should at least protect them when possible.

Like it isn't bad enough that we are suffering, and questioning everything we did in the months we were pregnant as it is...:(

I agree that this is a very bizarre law and don't quite fully understand it. But it some ways I do see the point but think implementing it could be very hurtful to the majority of women (myself included) that have devastating miscarriages totally out of there control.

People do some pretty crazy and irresponsible stuff and when that harms a life that person needs to be held accountable. I have personally seen a women at 19 weeks try to cause her own abortion by buying cytotec (the meds placed in the vagina to induce labor -which was used on me for delivery) from the internet. They were able to stop her labor but if she wanted to kill that baby so badly on her own, what kind of mother will she end up being. Or the mother that used heroin throughout her pregnancy which known to cause placenta abrution and which is what happened and her baby was delivered at 23 weeks and by the grace of God survived. These are the "good" storied where the baby lived but how many times is that not the case. These bad decisions need to be held accountable. In a way this law is saying that these babies matter. And if your desicions as a "parent" create a harmful result (just as parents can't purposely hurt or put their "living" children's lives in jeopardy) you should be punished.

Not to get too political but sometimes I wonder if stillbirth has such a lack of funding and non-research b/c by acknowledging our babies (over 20 weeks) as viable life that 'matters' would conflict with the government abortion laws that say these lives (up to 28 weeks in some places legally) are dispensable. It's kinda a catch 22. And that breaks my heart.

This is pretty despicable. I think they are walking a very, very fine line. Does it make me mad when I hear about a mom who did drugs the entire time she was pregnant? Yes. Does it upset me that my cousins, who are wonderful foster parents, have two children they are watching with fetal alcohol syndrome? Yes. Did I cave and have the occasional can of soda pop when I was pregnant because I was craving it so bad? Yes.

Although it kills me to know that someone would potentially try to harm their baby, or knowingly continue to do something they know can hurt their baby while pregnant, there is probably way too much gray area here. What about the mom who doesn't even realize she is pregnant until the end of her first trimester and has a miscarriage and did some type of "reckless behavior"? It does happen. Should she be prosecuted? Crazy.
