I agree with Mayberry, what ever day works for you, I used to try to do it on a special day like my b-day or a number day like 7-7-7 or 10-10-10, then I just figured any day I quit was special
I think New Years can work too, any day that you quit will be a good day

I also used Chantix successfully and I believe that it really helped the initial cravings enough to allow me to get through the withdrawal. I have been off Chantix for 3 months and haven't smoked for for 5 (so something's working)
