You have to do what is right, & works for, you. I have never succeeded with the cutting down method because all it took for me to smoke way more than the allowed number of cigarettes was stress...stress of any kind. Bad things, good things...oh look, a sunny day & I'm on the patio with a cocktail talking to a friend! you get it ; ). As I said though, that was *me* & you might have more self control that I did.
I've never been a big fan of nicotine replacement either (I've tried it) as I feel like it drags things out as well...I did, however, decide to use nicotine gum on my last quit to help me through, & I believe it did. I didn't chew anywhere near the amount to get equal nicotine delivery I would have from the cigs I'd been smoking. I chose to use the gum for two weeks whenever I felt like I was going to burst, then I tapered off during the third week & was done with it...this is just an example of what worked for me, I'm sure at least half of it was psychological.
I wish you lots of strength when you decide you are ready. The people here are really supportive & will help you drag yourself through the rough bits so keep coming back!
So sorry to hear about your loses and your songs ordeal.
There is a third hand smoke here, that isn't good for your son.
Offer your quit and the opportunity for a longer life to those who didn't have an option, you do.
I found a home here on DS, hope you do too.
