Smoking Addiction & Recovery Support Group
The CDC claims that nicotine is a "very addictive drug" that can be "as addictive as heroin or cocaine." Nicotine is typically eliminated from the body within 2 to 3 days, however, physical and psychological withdrawal symptoms may last for much longer depending on the individual. If you are trying to kick the habit, this community is dedicated to giving smokers the...
Have you considered Hypnosis? My Caregiver did just that and she has been smoke free for over 20 years. She had to go twice.
I am a firm believer than any one can quit if the really want to, you have to wrap your brain around it first. Bad habits are hard to break, it's like the Cheetos that I was addicted to, oh yes, very much so. I just quit buying them, I dreams about them I almost gave in several times. Even today in the grocery I walk buy them look and say "just one bag wont hurt"....but then I say no that ain't happening. Yes, I would be addicted again.
I ain't talking a bag here and there, I am talking case and was never without a reserve bag.
Talk with you Doctor and is she refers you to a Hypnotist, insurance will pay for it.
I think you are wrong not to consult your Dad about your addiction, cause he would help you dear.
I definitely agree with Grannie on this one. Tell your parents that you are dealing with this addiction. They love you, I can tell as they have NOT mentioned that they know you smoke. You are old enough to make your own decisions and they are respecting that. Now you show them the same respect. Believe me, if they are non smokers, they KNOW you are smoking. The smell can't be hidden no matter how much perfume, mouth wash body spray that you use. Be honest. My youngest(27) still smokes and even though she NEVER smokes near me, I can always smell when she walks into my house. I love her anyway and so will your folks.
Please talk with your doctor and GOOD LUCK.
You say you are throwing away your pack of cigarettes on the way to the doctors......plz do so and DO NOT go out to buy another pack no matter how bad the urges are.......KEEP VERY BUSY DURING THE URGES. Cut straws in half and do the hand to mouth thing.....even pretend to ash. I'm afraid you are sensitive to all NRT's including the inhaler and may have to go cold turkey. It's not fun to say the least and it takes a ton of work on your part, but it is doable.
I like grannie's idea of hypnosis and like she said, it may take a few times to have the full effect.
You have got to have a plan in place for when the urges or triggers come along becuz you know full well they do come and they come with a vengeance!!!!!!! So have your plan in place ahead of time (stock up on sugarfree candy, gum.......or call a friend/hotline to talk your way through it). Like I said, it will not be easy, but if you believe in yourself and you really, really want this more than anything......you will do anything to make it happen....ok?
I love you tons and I'm a toughie......been through several addictions.....this was the last one to go and I am FINALLY living addiction free. I have a new respect for living a good and healthy life.
Smoking took alot of money and time. I smelled horrible. I had to stand out in the cold, rain, and snow to puff my life away instead of facing my depression and horrible feelings. I lived a nightmare which my therapist said not even half the population will ever experience or know about. I lived in quiet desperation and on survival mode for most of my 52 years of life. I needed addictions to deal with the emotional trauma and PTSD I have endured since 3 years old. I use to think my feelings would make me disintegrate
or if I started crying, I would never stop. I am living proof that neither of those things happened.
If I had to live my life over would I choose to have not had bad things happen to me????? Without hesitation I say "bring it all back on" becuz it made me the loving, caring, STRONG person I am today. It shaped my very being. Does it mean I enjoyed the horrible things in life? Of course not.....not one bit......but like I said, I am who I am today becuz of it. I was bent, but never broken.
A wise young woman told me a while back....."If everything good happened at the beginning of our lives, we would have nothing left to look forward to.....the best is yet to come!" Those words.....those beautiful words of truth!!!!!! They saved my life and gave me a different point of view on life.
My piano teacher (RIP) had a sign on her piano (this was 35 years ago) that read "Life is like a piano....it depends on how you play it."
I have never heard a more true statement. This means that we make life what we want it to be. If we want a happy life, it will not just fall out of the sky......you have to make it what you want it to be.
This is the same way for smoking. You make it what you want it to be. You can give in to the nicodemon every time he calls out to you or you can turn around, give him the finger and say outloud....."Not today buddy.....get lost!!!!!!!!"
*getting off soap box and sending tons of (((((((((((Hugs)))))))))))))))))))
Do you have a backup plan in case you can't talk to someone right away? How can you distract yourself until the urge passes?
What would keep you motivated? Do you exercise?
These are very important questions to ask yourself if you want a permanent quit.......plus I'm practicing to become a detective in an interrogation scenario...lol
Love ya and just wanna help ((((((((((((Hugs)))))))))))))))))
