Is hair loss connected to Sjogren's? A lot of my hair has been falling out lately so I'm just wandering.

The doctor says so yes iv basically got very thin patchs around my face if i put my hair in a pony tail you can really see the patchs balding

I was informed that Leflunomide (Arava) can cause hair loss in 1-3% of people. Interested if anyone has had luck with things that help.

My Dr. prescribed folic acid to go along with MTX and it has helped. I lost a lot of hair initially, but it started to grow back about 2-3 months after starting the medications. The folic acid is suppose to help with side effects of MTX, but also helps with hair and fingernails being brittle. I'm not sure if this is related or not, but my hair use to be loose waves and when it came back in, most of it came back pretty curly and also most of it came back in gray. I'm good with it, just thought it was interesting.

OK! I too, have a new diagnosis of SS, and have been experiencing severe hair loss for the last several months, to the point where it's now about a third of the amount that it used to be, especially around the sides and temples. What new hair is coming back is loose curls, and used to be totally straight! Have only been started on topical anti inflammatory/ pain gels for the joint pain, in addition to the Meloxicam that I had been on for arthritis for yrs. Did not tolerate the Salagen for mouth dryness, and because my lip biopsies were negative (SSA was positive x 3), my Rheum. has not started me on any other meds. at this time, and was not concerned with the increasing fatigue, pain, etc. My Neurologist remains concerned about the Neuropathy loss of balance, and memory loss, but says my Rheum. has to manage my SS! Frustrating.

Yes, it can cause hair loss. It dries out everything or at one point in time or another inflammation gets into every crevice of your body. Even your cranial fluid where your brain sits. Can cause migraines. Hair is just another part of SjS. I've had it for 26 yrs now maybe longer. Diagnosed for 12 or so....Without plaquenil I'd be a mess with joint pain. Not sure you can stop hair loss. I stay in shape by hiking daily. I take krill oil, coQ10 ...turmeric and Vit D all winter. This keeps my blood panels good.

I have been having the same issue, but for years. I had a biopsy done and found out I have frontal fibrosing alopecia. Check it out. Ask your doctors about it. My dermatologist said it affects people who have autoimmune disorders.
