Single Parenting Support Group
Today being raised by a single parent is not uncommon. About three in ten children live in a single parent home. The most common type of single parent home is one with only a mother. However, single father homes are the fastest growing type of family situation; 60% growth in the last ten years alone.
Hello everyone. Thought that I would post on here because I am single parent and going through a few things and maybe I could get some advice.
I have a 12 year old son. His father has never been in his life. I have been doing it all on my own with the help of my family since i was pregnant. I had alot of family help me out with things for him while i was pregnant and even a few friends helpped me out with some things. It hasnt been easy but I am doing the best that I can everyday. He has ADHD, just got glasses a month ago and just got diagnosed with depression 2 weeks ago. He is now homeschooled after we had some problems with the public school he was in. Over the years, he has always had my dad there for him. We lived with my dad till my son was almost 4 years old. Since we moved 4 hours away, he visits some, we visit some and my son goes there for a few weeks in the summer to see him, my sister and my grandfather. He is a great kid for the most part. I tok him to be seen by a doctor because he has been acting out alot lately in ager, hitting things and breaking them, hitting the dresser and floor while playing his xbox, etc etc. While we was at the doctor talkng about things that has been going on, the NP brought up his dad. She asked him if he wanted to see him or talk to him. I knew that this would come up in time but i am now getting ready to have this talk with him and the therapirst when he starts going soon bc he has an intake to see which kind of therapy or cousling he will need to best help him with what he is going through right now. I have a few ideas of while he is acting out lately but i am not sure about it. He wont talk to me, my mom (who we live with), my dad, my boyfriend or anyone else. He just does his school work, plays the xbox. No friends around here to play with. I was with someone for over 5 years and had two kids with him. They go to his house on the weekends and I think that my oldest is jealous of them because he is always here and doesnt go anywhere while they go away on the weekends. My mom, and my boyfriend both agree with me that he may be jealous of his brother and sister since they go to their dad house on the weekend.
I have two youner children, 2 and 6,by my ex and we was together for over 5 years. After we broke up he was staying here for a few months just sleeping on the couch. Then he moved when I told him that I couldnt take it with him living here still, it made things strange. He moved away to another state to live with his new girlfriend he had met. A few months after he moved, he came back for a weekend to see the kids. I was dating someone at the time so me and him got a hotel for the weekend so my ex could have some time with the kids alone without me around, my mom was at the house with him and the kids. He went back after the weekend was over. He finally got a job and child support was set in and it was being taken out of his check then sent to me on a card. He would call and talk to the kids over the phone and i would send him pictures and give him updates on what the doctors would say. After a few months, he called me telling me of an idea. Him and his gf was talking about moving up here so that he could be closer to his kids. I was all for that. But he wanted to know if he could live with us here till he got a job and then his gf and her son would move here. It was only going to be a couple of months, sept 1 till thanksgiving. I knew that it would be strange around here but i had to put that aside for my kids. But it got pushed back and back and back several times. I didnt think that he would ever leave. It was getting really bad around here. He finally got a job and the child support was going again. But during that time, he wasnt helping with the bills around the house like he said he was going to, he didnt put gas in the cars but wanted to use them and me and my mom was taking him to work and picking him up. He some times would cook dinner but never cleaned up around the house. He would watch the kids so I could go out and see a friend or two here and there. AFter the first of the year he did his taxes and was suppose to have the money to move her up here. But he lost his job and then used the money to go buy a brand new xbox one and a new phone. He didnt move out till july of last summer, 6 months ago. He gets the kids on the weekends. we met up on friday when he gets off and met up again on sunday evenings. There is a court order in place for child support but right now at his job they dont take it out of his check, he has to send it in when he gets paid. Thats fine, but he doesnt send in the full amount each month. He only sends in half the amount of the order. Then he calls me up and asks for diapers for my daughter for his house, food for them all at his house (him, his gf, her son, and our two kids that we have together). I may live with my mom, but I dont ask her to buy anything for me and my kids. I buy their diapers, wipes, pull ups, toilet paper, cat food, dish soap, bath things, toys, clothes, shoes, school supplies, my cell phone, etc. The only thing I ask my mom for help some times is gas money and maybe a bottle of juice ( i vap). But thats not all the time. I dont like to ask her for anything since she is paying the bills around here. I wont let my kids go without but I am tired of him always thinking that we will give him everything that he should be be buying himself. I dont have much money coming in and i have to do all that I can to make it last and with him asking for things that i buy enough for to have at my house it makes things harder on me. I dont like that. I wouldnt say much about it if he was doing what he said that he would do 2 years ago to the child support office and agreed to the court order and signed all the paper work. But he isnt and its making it hard on things that my kids need some times. I really hate asking my mom or dad for money for things for my kids but sometimes i have to bc i cant count of my ex to do what he is suppose to do. It really it hard being a single mother some times but i do the best that I can everyday. I have one child that is special needs and has alot of doctor appts and my baby girl is at the age that she wants everything and anything that she sees and dont understand. But we try our best everyday. Sometimes I just wish that I had some help.
I have been a single mom, full time student and working part time or full time since May of 2016. My daughter was only 13 months old when I chose this path. It has been the most stressful and scary time of my life. I will NOT lie about that. But at the end of the day..my daughter will know what I did to make our lives better. My daughter will see how strong of a person/mom that I am.
The lord above will only give you what you can handle. With or with out a Man. And the kids will be just fine...when the time comes..the absent parent mom or dad will have to answer to the child not the other parent. I feel that every single Mom out there is doing there very best..we all have our struggles some worse than others. But just remember..things could be even worse, as long as the child has someone...roof over their head..clothes on their back, food in the belly and a lot of love. That is truly all they need. Keep your head up. And never give up because those little smiles you wake up to every morning are truly the only thing that matters. NOT anything else. Not even child support. No money in the world could give us what we see in our little angels every day that the absent parent does not enjoy and see. Just remember that. :)
