Herpes zoster, colloquially known as shingles, is the reactivation of varicella zoster virus, leading to a crop of painful blisters over the area of a dermatome. It occurs very rarely in children and adults, but its incidence is high in the elderly (over 60), as well as in any age group of immunocompromised patients.
Hi I am new to the group.
I got these rashes in a perfect line down in the bikini area (below belly button above groin) to the R near panty line. This is the 3rd time in the last 7 months of an out break and i'm noticing a pattern that before the rash appears, I get horrible nerve pain in the area and down through the groin all the way back up my R butt cheek. It also tends to hurt down my thigh and this 3rd one hurt me all the way down my leg to my toes. All the pain started about 4 days before the rash appeared. The second day wasn't so itchy but painful but now the itch is driving me crazy! I put topical Zovirax on it since it worked the 1st 2 times, but now it seems to do nothing.
i've had shingles on the palm of my R hand before but it wasn't this much trouble. I am scheduled to see my doc on Monday. Am I right for thinking that these 3 outbreaks down there is shingles too?

I pretty sure it has to be confirmed with a test from one of the blisters, then you will know how to treat it or prevent it from further outbreaks. Did you ever try anti-viral med?

no but my doc got me on zovirax pills now

For me, unfortunatly, it is too late for me to take any meds to cure it or anything like that. I wasn't sure what I had so I didnt go to the Dr. within the first 48 hours out a outbreak. My Dr. put me on Darvacet and Xanax because my shingles were brought on by extreme stress and anxiety. Mine are on my left side and one spot on my thigh itches like crazy at times (before I knew what it was I would scratch so much and so hard that I bruised my self and broke blood vesels and now there are red spots there), the other spot on my top left butt check has the blisters/rash. She said I could use calmine(sp?) lotion but it wouldnt really help any. She said just to cover it with a dry bandage. That it is contagious so to be very careful on who and what I touch. I had never had them before so I had no idea what it was. I honestly thought it was just hives on my leg.

I thought it was hives too but the blisters wouldn't go away for a few weeks. and the pain is insane about 4 days before the beak out, so i know it's not hives.

You really need to get a diagnosis from a doctor. Shingles is not contagious. You cannot transmit shingles between people. What happens is that a person who has never had chickenpox can get chickenpox from a person with active shingles lesions if the person comes into contact with the fluid from the shingles blisters. The cause of shingles is activation of the chickenpox virus years after the chickenpox has resolved.
