Herpes zoster, colloquially known as shingles, is the reactivation of varicella zoster virus, leading to a crop of painful blisters over the area of a dermatome. It occurs very rarely in children and adults, but its incidence is high in the elderly (over 60), as well as in any age group of immunocompromised patients.
I've been on Gabapentin for 3 years. Has anyone stopped taking it, and did you just stop or tapper off? If the pain comes back and you go back on it, does it still help?

My doctor said that you absolutely must taper off. There are bad side effects, if you stop cold turkey. I was on 1800 mg for just 2 months, and when it was time to stop, my doctor said to decrease by 300 mg every 2 days. But since you have been on it for so long, I think it best that you take it down even more gradually. Maybe decrease by 300 mg each week, might work better for you. And yes, you can always go back on it, if the pain comes back, but the same thing applies. Go up gradually, not all the way up to the full amount at once.
